Ham Rong Bridge, spanning the Ma River, is a historical symbol associated with the heroic victories of the army and people of Thanh Hoa during the resistance war against the US.

This place not only boasts the historic bridge that witnessed "two dark days for the US Air Force," but also features picturesque landscapes, ancient villages thousands of years old, and cultural, spiritual, and experiential spaces rich in unique character.

Where history becomes legend

Ham Rong Mountain has long been a historical symbol of Thanh Hoa province and the entire country during the years of resistance against the American invasion.

Stretching along the Ma River, this land not only bears witness to glorious victories but also boasts a system of unique scenic spots and cultural relics, creating a space that is both majestic and poetic.

The Ham Rong Historical and Cultural Relic Area currently covers an area of approximately 568 hectares with 22 relics and cultural works, including many national and provincial-level relics such as Ham Rong Bridge, Quyet Thang Hill, C4 Hill, Truc Lam Ham Rong Zen Monastery, the temple dedicated to Vietnamese Heroic Mothers and Martyrs, Dong Son ancient village, Duc Thanh Ca Temple , etc.

Within that complex, Ham Rong Bridge is the most distinctive landmark. The first steel bridge was built by the French in 1904, but was later destroyed in 1946 to serve the scorched-earth resistance against French colonialism.

In 1962, the Ham Rong Bridge was rebuilt with a sturdy structure, becoming a vital transportation artery connecting the North and South of Vietnam.

In April 1965, this area entered its most intense period. On April 3rd and 4th, the US imperialists mobilized more than 300 aircraft to launch numerous fierce attacks aimed at cutting off the strategic transportation route.

However, with unwavering determination and courageous fighting spirit, the army and people of Thanh Hoa firmly defended the bridge, shooting down dozens of enemy aircraft, achieving the resounding victory at Ham Rong.

More than 60 years have passed, the bombings are a thing of the past, but the memory of the "Ham Rong epic" remains as valuable as ever.

Landmarks like C4 Hill, Quyet Thang Hill, and Ham Rong Bridge are not only tourist attractions but have also become "red addresses" for educating the younger generation about revolutionary traditions.

Besides its historical beauty, Ham Rong also captivates tourists with its unique natural scenery.

Ham Rong Mountain, with its fascinating shape reflected in the Ma River, creates a picturesque landscape. From above, the entire lush green countryside appears peaceful and idyllic.

According to many ancient texts, the Ham Rong area was once likened to a "fairyland". In the "Dai Nam Nhat Thong Chi", it is described as a land with scenery where "the water and sky are one color," rarely matched elsewhere.

In recent years, along with the preservation of historical relics, Ham Rong is gradually becoming an attractive cultural tourism destination in Thanh Hoa.

Many historical sites have been restored and renovated; cultural activities and historical experiences are regularly organized to attract tourists.

According to statistics from the Ham Rong Ward Public Service Center, the historical site currently receives approximately 20,000 visitors annually.

According to the Center's leadership, the unit has recently completed the "Ham Rong Scenic Spot" exhibition area and is coordinating the implementation of the "Following in the Footsteps of History - The Heroic Spirit of C4 Hill" experiential program for students to spread the historical and cultural values of this region.

Besides its historical value, Ham Rong also boasts many destinations rich in cultural identity. Particularly noteworthy is the ancient Dong Son village located on the southern bank of the Ma River, which still preserves an ancient well over 2,000 years old, moss-covered alleys, and many old houses reflecting traditional Vietnamese architecture.

To promote the cultural beauty of the ancient village, many experiential activities have been organized, such as the Dong Son ancient village tour and the "Traditional Tet in the Ancient Village" program, contributing to making this place an attractive destination on the Thanh Hoa tourism map.

In addition, Tien Son Cave, located halfway up Muon Mountain, with its shimmering stalactites and magical scenery, is also becoming a popular check-in spot attracting many tourists, especially young people.

Ms. Le Thi Thanh, Vice Chairwoman of Ham Rong Ward, said that Ham Rong is not only a source of pride for the local people but also a "red address" with special significance in educating the younger generation about revolutionary traditions.

Over the years, the locality has always focused on preserving, restoring, and promoting the value of historical sites and scenic spots associated with the development of cultural tourism, gradually making Ham Rong an attractive destination in Thanh Hoa.

According to Ms. Thanh, along with heritage preservation efforts, Ham Rong ward is stepping up promotional activities to spread the image of a land rich in historical and cultural traditions and tourism potential to a wide audience of people and tourists inside and outside the province.

On May 20, 2026, the People's Committee of Ham Rong Ward issued a plan to organize the "Beautiful Ham Rong Photos" contest and the "Ideas for Tourism Development and Creative Tourism Products in Ham Rong" contest in 2026.

The competition aims to select photographic works that authentically reflect the natural beauty, culture, people, and historical relics of Ham Rong, serving the purpose of promoting tourism, boosting trade, and developing the local economy and society.

At the same time, this is also an opportunity to seek new and creative ideas to effectively exploit the tourism potential and gradually develop more unique tourism products for Ham Rong in the future.

"Through this competition, we hope to spread the image of Ham Rong more widely – a heroic land rich in cultural identity and unique landscapes; thereby attracting tourists and investors, while also arousing love for the homeland and awareness of preserving and promoting heritage values in each citizen," Ms. Thanh shared.
