E10 biofuel is safe for engines!

Regulatory agencies and businesses affirm that, to date, there have been no negative reports regarding the quality of E10 bioethanol fuel for engines.

No negative impact on the engine has been observed.

According to Circular 50/2025/TT-BCT of the Ministry of Industry and Trade, which stipulates the roadmap for applying the blending ratio of biofuels with traditional fuels in Vietnam, from June 1, 2026, E10 bioethanol will officially be introduced to the market and used nationwide. Currently, the issue of particular public concern is the safety of E10 gasoline for vehicle engines. According to Mr. Dao Duy Anh - Deputy Director of the Department of Innovation, Green Transition and Industrial Promotion, Ministry of Industry and Trade, during the process of developing the biofuel roadmap, the Ministry of Industry and Trade conducted surveys and assessments on the potential impact of E5 and E10 bioethanol on engine performance and lifespan.

According to assessments by scientists at Hanoi University of Science and Technology and Hanoi University of Transport, E5 and E10 gasoline have virtually no significant negative impact on the performance or lifespan of engine components in gasoline engines.

Notably, Vietnam has been using E5 gasoline nationwide since 2018, while E10 has been piloted since August 2025. However, to date, neither distribution businesses nor the Ministry of Industry and Trade have received any feedback regarding E5 or E10 negatively impacting engine performance or lifespan, ” Mr. Dao Duy Anh shared.

According to Mr. Dao Duy Anh, international experience also shows that biofuels have been used for a very long time. The US and Brazil have been using E10 gasoline since the 1980s. In Southeast Asia, Thailand and the Philippines are now using E15, and are even upgrading to E20 without recording significant negative impacts on vehicle engines.

From a market management perspective, Mr. Nguyen Anh Tuan, Head of the Petroleum and Gas Business Management Department, Domestic Market Management and Development Agency, Ministry of Industry and Trade , stated that vehicles manufactured from 2022 onwards basically meet the requirements for using E10 gasoline according to Euro 3, Euro 4, and Euro 5 emission standards.

Regarding other vehicles, Mr. Nguyen Anh Tuan added that, according to reports from Petrolimex and PV Oil, the two units that introduced E10 gasoline to the market from August 1, 2025, there have been no complaints or requests regarding the quality of E10 gasoline for cars and motorcycles currently on the market since its implementation in August 2025. This fact partly shows that concerns about E10 harming engines are unfounded based on actual implementation data.

Speaking from the perspective of a business representative, Mr. Dao Cong Quyet, Head of the Communications Subcommittee of the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers Association (VAMA), affirmed to a reporter from the Industry and Trade Newspaper that car manufacturers are always committed to the government's clean fuel roadmap. Currently, most new car models from VAMA members are designed to be compatible with E10 gasoline. Businesses have also disseminated information about the use of E10 gasoline to their dealerships and customers.

Technically, most newer car models are compatible with E10 gasoline. However, for some older models, often manufactured before 2005 or using older technologies such as carburetors, ethanol, due to its high corrosive properties and water-absorbing capacity, may have a certain impact on natural rubber or non-alcohol-resistant plastic parts. VAMA recommends that customers owning older cars should proactively have their vehicles inspected at authorized dealerships for advice and replacement of parts such as gaskets and fuel lines if necessary before switching to E10 gasoline ,” Mr. Dao Cong Quyet informed.

According to VAMA, research and use of biofuels have been implemented by global automakers in many markets such as Thailand, Indonesia, and Brazil. In addition, the Vietnamese government has issued regulations related to biofuels for over 10 years. Therefore, before introducing vehicles to the Vietnamese market, manufacturers conduct technical assessments based on actual operating conditions and Vietnamese standards to ensure the highest level of compatibility before making official recommendations to customers. If vehicles are regularly maintained and use E10 gasoline that meets the manufacturer's recommendations, then there is complete peace of mind when using this type of fuel.

Ensuring the quality of petroleum products supplied to the market.

On the part of the largest fuel distributor in the market, Mr. Nguyen Quang Dung - Deputy General Director of Vietnam Petroleum Corporation (Petrolimex) said that starting from 2025, Petrolimex has proactively made comprehensive preparations for the large-scale production and business of E10 gasoline, with a particular focus on fuel quality.

According to Mr. Dung, the company has invested in upgrading its automated blending systems with high capacity, and has also developed a comprehensive logistics plan from the sourcing of base gasoline and E100 fuel ethanol to the transportation and distribution of E10 gasoline to transit depots and retail outlets nationwide.

Simultaneously, Petrolimex is working with domestic and international suppliers to ensure that the supply of mineral gasoline and E100 ethanol meets the requirements in terms of production volume, delivery schedule, and especially input quality. The company also maintains appropriate inventory levels to ensure a continuous supply of raw materials for the production and sale of E10 gasoline from the moment of large-scale implementation.

Currently, Petrolimex's total gasoline sales volume reaches approximately 400,000 - 500,000 m3/month. According to Mr. Dung, the entire supply plan and contracts have been prepared in a coordinated manner to meet consumption needs and match the company's blending capacity.

Notably, Petrolimex's automated blending systems have been certified as compliant with Vietnamese standards for biofuels by the National Standards and Quality Measurement Committee. The entire process, from input, blending, transportation to retail, is strictly controlled.

" In fact, from 2018 to the present, Petrolimex's production and business of E5 and E10 bioethanol fuel has been operated under strict control procedures and has not recorded any incidents related to the quality of bioethanol fuel, " Mr. Nguyen Quang Dung emphasized.

Following its trial implementation starting on August 1, 2025, E10 gasoline is ready to move out of the trial phase and enter mass commercial production nationwide as scheduled from June 1, 2026.
