Dr. Thien shared that he has nearly 10 years of diverse educational experiences, studying and working in developed countries from Asia to North America. He recognizes that the surrounding environment offers many opportunities for learning, training, and self-development. However, the number of students and colleagues from Vietnam is always very small compared to their international peers. Therefore, he envisioned building a centralized platform where people can search for and share information on full scholarships, academic experiences, and scientific research. In 2024, he founded the academic community PhD.Hub.
In addition, Dr. Thien established the PhD.Hub Foundation, a volunteer fund, to support and empower young Vietnamese people from disadvantaged backgrounds who are resilient and passionate about learning. Using his personal resources, Dr. Thien sponsors scholarships, provides academic resources, hones skills, and directly guides these students to overcome difficulties and reach out to the world .
“Through the two years since founding the PhD.Hub academic community and the PhD.Hub Foundation volunteer fund, I hope to contribute, however small, but sustainable, to bringing Vietnamese knowledge to the global stage. Through this, students will have the opportunity to study and conduct research in developed countries, and later return to contribute to building a more prosperous and beautiful Vietnam,” Dr. Thien shared.
According to Dr. Thien, the PhD.Hub academic community currently has nearly 130,000 members, including students, master's and doctoral candidates, and professors working both domestically and internationally. Through this community, not only is the latest information on master's and doctoral scholarships provided, but also academic and study abroad counseling and support are offered. To date, the community has facilitated the securing of over 5,000 scholarships, helping many students realize their dreams of studying abroad.
With the PhD.Hub Foundation volunteer fund, specifically, Dr. Thien implements 6 support programs including: "Thousands of Books - Millions of Dreams" (an annual volunteer program to donate books, stories, school supplies, and necessities to students in mountainous areas), visa cost support (supporting 50 million VND in student visa fees for 15-20 students annually), free guidance, free university entrance exam preparation courses for students in remote areas, support in connecting students with excellent, dedicated, and experienced mentors in the same field, and scholarships for disadvantaged students with good academic achievements.
“The stories of these hardworking, academically gifted young people who face many difficulties are the driving force behind my daily and hourly development of the academic community and volunteer fund. At the same time, I hope to expand the PhD.Hub academic community to help more students. In the future, I plan to launch free English classes for underprivileged young people. Furthermore, my goal is to become a professor of construction materials research in the United States. At that time, I believe there will be many opportunities to support Vietnamese students on their academic journey,” Dr. Thien affirmed.
From 2019 to 2021, Dr. Thien taught and worked at the Department of Civil Engineering, University of Technology, before going to the United States on a full scholarship for a PhD in civil engineering at Virginia Polytechnic University (USA).
In 2023, he successfully defended his doctoral dissertation on low-carbon adhesive materials. Currently, Dr. Thien is a graduate student in Civil Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin. He has published nearly 30 prestigious scientific papers on "green" materials that contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and combating climate change.
