Duc Tho is urgently working to control the African swine fever outbreak.

Duc Tho District ( Ha Tinh Province) has just announced an outbreak of African swine fever in Lam Trung Thuy commune, and has also cordoned off areas at high risk of outbreaks in several neighboring areas.

The family of Ms. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Tram in Trung Nam village (Lam Trung Thuy commune) raised 37 pigs, including both meat pigs and sows, of which about 20 were ready for sale. Before selling, the family asked the commune's veterinary staff to inspect and take samples for testing, which revealed that 9 pigs, weighing a total of 450 kg, were infected with African Swine Fever and had to be culled. According to Ms. Tram, the pigs were raised by the family to supply the market during the Tet holiday, but this incident has caused significant economic losses.

The pigs belonging to Ms. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Tram's family, which were infected with African swine fever, have been taken away for destruction.

To date, Lam Trung Thuy commune has detected 40 pigs belonging to 12 households infected with the disease, mainly concentrated in 5 villages: Trung Bac, Trung Khanh, Trung Dong, Trung Nam, and Hoa Binh , with a total weight of 2,666 kg. Under the guidance of the District Center for Application of Science and Technology and Protection of Plants and Animals, the local authorities have proceeded to destroy all infected pigs.

To proactively prevent and control the disease, the Lam Trung Thuy commune authorities require all livestock farms to take samples from their animals for African Swine Fever testing before selling them. This is one of the ways to detect infected animals early, thereby implementing effective disease control measures and preventing widespread outbreaks.

Duc Tho District has issued Decision No. 1989/QD-UBND on the declaration of African swine fever in Lam Trung Thuy commune; at the same time, it has demarcated areas at high risk of outbreaks, including the communes of Bui La Nhan, Yen Ho, Tan Dan, An Dung and Thanh Binh Thinh.

Mr. Ha Quang Thang, Deputy Director of the Center for Application of Science and Technology and Protection of Plants and Animals in Duc Tho District, said: “To strengthen measures to contain and suppress the outbreak and prevent its spread, the unit and Lam Trung Thuy commune have sent officials to villages and livestock farms to conduct inspections and collect samples for testing to detect infected animals early. The center has also provided 300 liters of disinfectant chemicals and guided people on hygiene measures for livestock pens and implemented disease prevention measures in accordance with regulations.”

The pigs that have not been infected are being cared for and strictly protected against disease by farmers in Lam Trung Thuy.

Lam Trung Thuy commune is strictly implementing containment and disease control measures. At the same time, it is stepping up propaganda efforts, guiding people to promptly inform commune veterinary staff and local authorities whenever they discover sick pigs or pig products that are not eating or suspected of being diseased; and prohibiting the transportation of pigs into and out of the area during the outbreak without a safety confirmation from the veterinary agency.

To proactively prevent and limit the spread of disease, Duc Tho district also requested neighboring localities to strengthen propaganda on the situation and developments of the disease; raise awareness and responsibility of livestock farmers and those engaged in trading and slaughtering to proactively implement disease prevention and control measures; and at the same time guide and advise livestock farmers not to increase or restock herds until disease safety conditions are ensured.
