In the early hours of June 30th, the German team was unable to overcome Paraguay in 90 minutes and extra time, ultimately losing 3-4 in the penalty shootout of their Round of 32 World Cup match.
This defeat came as a huge shock as Paraguay, ranked 41st in the FIFA rankings, beat Germany, ranked 10th. This was one of the most shocking upsets in the history of the World Cup knockout rounds.
More importantly, this was also the first time in their World Cup history that the German national team was eliminated by a penalty shootout.
Previously, in four instances where matches had to be decided by penalties, "Die Mannschaft" eliminated France , England, Mexico, and Argentina. It's safe to say that Germany was once the most composed team in penalty shootouts at the World Cup.
Sadly, this is the third consecutive World Cup where Germany has failed to reach the round of 16. From being champions in 2014, the "German Panzer" has been eliminated early in 2018, 2022, and now 2026.

This dismal performance also made Germany the first team in history to fail to reach the round of 16 in three consecutive World Cups after winning the tournament.
Furthermore, this defeat ensures Brazil retains its position as the only team to have won the World Cup five times, regardless of the results of the remaining teams in the 2026 tournament.
Brazil currently leads the World Cup with 5 titles in 1958, 1962, 1970, 1994, and 2002. Germany and Italy are in second place with 4 titles each. However, Italy failed to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
Among the remaining teams in the tournament, Argentina is the only one that could increase its total number of titles to four if it wins, while France is aiming for its third title in history. However, neither has yet been able to threaten Brazil's top spot on the list of most successful World Cup teams.
