With more than 100 million domestic NAPAS cards, which people still call ATM cards, having been issued, the process of converting from magnetic cards to chip cards has been implemented by banks since 2019. As of May 2025, the market still has about 8 million magnetic cards, but only about 14% of them still generate transactions, corresponding to about 8.4% of transactions recorded through the NAPAS system at ATMs and 1.3% at POS.
In recent years, card transactions have tended to decrease, users increasingly prefer to pay via accounts, e-wallets or QR codes. In addition to completing the conversion to chip cards, banks are also promoting the digitalization of card services. According to Napas, to stay ahead of the trend, the unit has deployed Apple Pay and Bankpay services for Napas domestic cards, making payment via virtual cards integrated right on smartphones more convenient and faster than ever.
