Don't become dependent on AI.

Modern journalistic practice presents new demands, requiring journalists to master technology, but it also comes with a mandatory requirement: Artificial intelligence (AI) must not replace the role of verification and creativity of human journalists.

Many amenities

In the context of modern journalism, AI offers many practical benefits. This technology helps journalists process large volumes of data, summarize information quickly, and find sources efficiently.

AI tools such as data analysis, content automation, and media trend identification help save time and improve the quality of writing.

Journalist Du Xuan Nha (Law Protection Newspaper) shared that AI is truly a "revolution" for modern journalists. "AI helps me summarize hundreds of pages of reports in just a few minutes, helping me identify key points. It also suggests relevant sources of information, allowing me to delve deeper into the issue without wasting too much time."

According to journalist Du Xuan Nha, AI is not just a search tool but also supports the analysis of complex data, such as statistics or financial reports, helping journalists produce more insightful articles.

In addition, AI also helps detect fake news and identify patterns of misinformation on social media, thereby helping journalists verify sources more quickly.

Platforms like Google Fact Check Tools and other big data analytics tools integrate AI, resulting in greater accuracy in information processing. In this age of information explosion, where millions of articles and posts appear online every day, AI has become a powerful tool, helping journalists avoid being overwhelmed by the sea of data.

Mastering technology

Although AI offers many benefits, its misuse can lead to certain problems, even "leading" journalists in the wrong direction in analyzing and processing data.

AI often relies on available data to create content, so it can sometimes make inaccurate or misleading inferences if the original data source is unreliable. AI-generated content often tends to be formulaic, lacking subtlety and emotion, making articles feel dry and unappealing to readers.

A noteworthy point from the Director of the Institute for Policy and Media Development Research (IPS), Nguyen Quang Dong, is that only about 34% of journalists in Vietnam use tools like Google Analytics to analyze reader data. Meanwhile, AI can personalize content very effectively for different reader groups.

"Journalists should understand who their readers are, what they want, and where they read. Journalists shouldn't approach AI with two extremes: either replacing it or opposing it. They should live with it and utilize it as an indispensable part of their work, but without losing the essence of journalism."

In a world where AI can "write for," "speak for," and "suggest for" journalists, the only thing that allows journalists to retain their position is the ability to think independently, genuine emotions, and engagement with reality," said Mr. Nguyen Quang Dong.

AI is a tool to assist, not to replace, journalists. If misused, journalists risk losing their creativity and ability to verify information, core elements of journalism, leading to works that lack "the breath of life."

AI-generated articles may be informative but lack emotional depth, failing to reflect the nuances of language or the subtle details that make an article compelling.

A readily apparent example is when writing about an event; AI can provide data and dates, but it struggles to convey the emotions of the participants, the excitement of the atmosphere, or the behind-the-scenes stories that only a journalist who witnessed the event firsthand can capture.

Journalist Nguyen Thanh Hieu (Petrotimes online magazine) shared that to master technology, journalists need to combine the use of AI with traditional skills. AI can assist in searching and analyzing data, but verifying information, exploiting real-world sources, and creating content must still be done by humans.

Journalists need to hone their ability to assess and evaluate data from AI, while maintaining professional ethics to ensure accurate and objective information.

“AI is a useful tool, but it cannot replace the role of journalists. Mastering the technology and using AI correctly will help journalists improve the quality of their work while maintaining creativity and emotion in their writing. Don't become dependent on AI; let it become a powerful assistant, helping journalists to develop further in the digital age,” said journalist Nguyen Thanh Hieu.
