The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommends that the concentration of lead or other heavy metals in lipstick should be below 10 ppm. If lipstick or any cosmetic product has a higher concentration of lead or heavy metals than the above-mentioned limit, it should not be used.
The reason is that lead in lipstick can easily cause changes in lip pigmentation. Additionally, applying lipsticks containing irritants can inadvertently cause inflammation of the lips, leading to increased inflammatory pigmentation and darker lips. Counterfeit or unbranded lipsticks can also darken lips and negatively impact health.
The lips are also a rather sensitive area because the skin there is quite thin. Therefore, even using expensive lipsticks from major brands can still cause allergic reactions.
To ensure safety, you should avoid buying cheap, unbranded lipsticks as the ingredients are difficult to identify. For genuine lipsticks, carefully read the ingredient list to minimize irritation and ensure the lead content meets standards. It's best to buy lipstick from reputable sources to avoid paying high prices for low-quality products.
Other lip care measures include exfoliating once or twice a week, gently massaging the lips, and using lip balm to prevent dryness and keep them smooth.
