Dzeko's arrival at Schalke had an immediate effect, not only on the pitch but also in business. According to Sport Bild , shortly after joining the Gelsenkirchen club, around 10,000 jerseys bearing the Bosnian & Herzegovina striker's name were sold.
With a net revenue of approximately 35 euros per shirt after deducting logistical costs, Schalke estimates a total of nearly 350,000 euros. After tax, the remaining figure is approximately 300,000 euros, equivalent to Dzeko's basic salary under his contract. In other words, revenue from shirt sales alone is enough to significantly offset the costs of this contract.
Schalke signed Dzeko on a free transfer without paying a transfer fee. The expenses mainly came from bonus clauses. Dzeko would receive additional money if he reached certain goal milestones or if the team gained promotion. If Schalke were to return to the Bundesliga, the veteran striker could potentially pocket a bonus of €400,000.
On the pitch, the 39-year-old striker quickly proved his worth. He quickly scored 3 goals in 3 matches in the German second division, including a goal on his debut against Kaiserslautern and a brace in the 2-2 draw with Dynamo Dresden on February 7th.
Initial results suggest that this winter transfer is having a comprehensive positive impact on Schalke, both professionally and commercially. Schalke currently sits second in Bundesliga 2, just one point behind Darmstadt.
