Construction begins on key projects to increase power supply capacity in special economic zones.

From December 16th to 20th, 2025, amidst the festive atmosphere of the groundbreaking and inauguration ceremonies for projects and works celebrating the 14th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam, the Southern Power Corporation (EVNSPC) organized the groundbreaking, energization, and inauguration of many important power projects in the provinces of An Giang , Ca Mau, Tay Ninh, and Dong Nai.

One of EVNSPC's key events was the groundbreaking ceremony for the 220kV Phu Quoc Substation in An Giang province. This project is of particular importance in ensuring a stable and long-term electricity supply, meeting the increasingly high load growth rate; creating a solid power infrastructure foundation, contributing to socio- economic development, attracting investment, and affirming the role and position of the Phu Quoc Special Economic Zone in the coming period, while also ensuring a safe and reliable electricity supply for the APEC 2027 Summit.

Construction of the 110kV Lai Son Substation in Kien Hai Special Zone, An Giang Province, will commence on December 17, 2025.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony on the morning of December 20th, the Standing Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of An Giang province, Nguyen Thanh Phong, stated that on December 15th, 2025, Phu Quoc marked several important milestones, such as welcoming Vietnam's 20 millionth international tourist ; attracting many large-scale investment projects; and gradually completing its transportation, urban, port, and airport infrastructure, ready to serve the APEC 2027 Summit. In this context, investing in the Phu Quoc 220kV Substation is an essential, strategic, and urgent requirement.

The project has a capacity of 3x250MVA; an underground cable length of 2.65km (2 circuits) and 15.5km of overhead lines, with a total investment of VND 877.61 billion. Upon commissioning, the Phu Quoc 220kV substation will receive power from the Kien Binh – Phu Quoc 220kV transmission line, switching from 110kV to 220kV operation, completing the connection to the 110kV power grid throughout the special economic zone, ensuring power supply according to the N-1 criterion under normal operating conditions.

Also in An Giang province, on December 17th, EVNSPC commenced construction of the Lai Son 110kV Substation (Kien Hai Special Economic Zone) with a total investment of over 101.4 billion VND. Once commissioned, the project will effectively utilize the An Bien – Lai Son 110kV power line currently operating at 22kV; provide stable and continuous electricity; reduce the medium-voltage power supply radius and minimize power losses; and meet the needs of daily life, services, production, and tourism for residents, businesses, administrative units, and armed forces on Lai Son Island and neighboring islands.

Specifically, the 110kV Lai Son substation will supply electricity to An Son Island and Nam Du Island from the national grid through the An Son - Nam Du Island Power Supply Project, expected to commence in 2026, replacing the current diesel power plants.

At the groundbreaking ceremony, Deputy Director of the An Giang Department of Industry and Trade, Le Thanh Hai, affirmed that the projects bringing the national power grid to the islands and special economic zones have brought positive effects to the local socio-economic development. After the national power grid was connected, the demand and power consumption of the people increased two to three times compared to the time when they used diesel generators; the socio-economic life of the islands has developed significantly, especially eco-tourism and resort tourism.
