International students bring cultural diversity, inspire integration among Vietnamese students, and simultaneously act as "cultural ambassadors," spreading the image of Da Nang and its people to international friends.
Impressions of Da Nang's land and people
Mala Homsombath (a Lao student currently studying at the University of Education) shared that her hometown is in Vientiane, the capital city, located deep inland, and she had never seen the sea before. When she came to study in Da Nang, Mala was impressed by the city's beauty, with beaches like My Khe and Nguyen Tat Thanh… Mala Homsombath shared these images of Da Nang with her family and friends back home. Everyone eagerly planned a visit to the city.
“I understand that Da Nang also has a ‘homestay’ model for international students to experience traditional Vietnamese family life. I hope to have the opportunity to experience it, and it will certainly be one of the interesting things about studying here,” Mala Homsombath expressed.
Recalling her first days in Da Nang, Lingjie Bao (a student on an exchange program between the University of Education and Guizhou Nationalities University, China) was quite bewildered because she couldn't speak a complete sentence in Vietnamese. However, after only four months, she was able to chat, ask about the weather, and even joke around in Vietnamese.
If asked to use "flavor" to describe her life in Da Nang, Lingjie Bao humorously replied, "It's very flavorful." It's not just the Quang noodles, the grilled pork vermicelli, or the crispy golden pancake... It's also the friendly question from the coconut water vendor in front of the school: "Do you need extra ice today?" These simple moments make Lingjie Bao deeply feel the warmth of the people of Da Nang.
“While Guizhou Nationalities University excels in large-scale multilateral exchanges, Da Nang University stands out for its close and caring approach, always supporting international students and making them feel welcomed and cared for every day. The combination of the open internationalization of Guizhou and the friendly, multicultural academic environment of Da Nang has given me a complete and very valuable study abroad experience,” Lingjie Bao commented.
The University of Da Nang is not only a place that equips international students with knowledge and skills, but also an internationalized ecosystem – a place that opens opportunities to explore Vietnamese culture, broaden understanding of the world , and especially to immerse themselves in a growing and diverse international student community. In particular, beyond their academic duties, international students are proud to play the role of "cultural ambassadors," contributing to spreading the identity, traditions, and image of their country to friends in the region and internationally.
Creating "global citizens"
According to a report by the Science and Technology and International Cooperation Board (Da Nang University), in the 2023-2024 academic year, member educational institutions welcomed 1,196 international students from 25 nationalities, while in the 2024-2025 academic year, this number increased to 1,263 students from 38 different nationalities.
The number of international students at the University of Da Nang increased by approximately 5.8%, expanding to include 13 new countries, reflecting a trend towards diversifying recruitment sources. The general trend in international student training over the past period has been an increase at the undergraduate level, stability at the master's level, but a decrease in short-term and research programs, reflecting a growing demand for long-term options and degrees with higher value.
“We are deeply grateful that international students have chosen us as their second home on their academic and personal journey. Coming to Da Nang, coming to Vietnam, international students bring with them cultural diversity, especially inspiring integration for Vietnamese students. They are also vibrant ‘cultural ambassadors,’ contributing to building a humane, international, and sharing academic environment,” said Associate Professor Dr. Le Thanh Bac, Vice Director of the University of Da Nang.
With the goal of becoming a "UNESCO Learning City by 2026," the University of Da Nang announced that it will move towards providing scholarships for international students and promoting a series of projects to upgrade support services and enhance the overall experience for international students (expanding dormitories, improving living services, and strengthening extracurricular activities and cultural exchanges).
According to expert Adrian Fraser Robertson, CEO of MyTeam Vietnam (an international enterprise deeply involved in technology, human resource training, and community development), in the context of deep international integration, there is a great need for "global citizens" who can adapt and communicate in an international environment – capable of working in a multicultural environment, confident, and open to diverse perspectives.
