The Best is an annual award founded by FIFA in 2016 to honor the best individuals in world football. This is a replacement award after FIFA returned the Golden Ball title to France Football magazine.
Notably, FIFA announced 12 nominees for the Best Men's Player award categories, including: Lionel Messi, Rodri, Gundogan, Bernardo Silva, Julian Alvarez, Kevin de Bruyne and Erling Haaland, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Victor Osimhen, Marcelo Brozovic, Declan Rice and Kylian Mbappe.
In this nomination list, the 3 most serious candidates are Erling Haaland, Mbappe and Messi. Erling Haaland is the "Top scorer" of the Premier League, European Cup 1 and won the treble with Man City. Meanwhile, Messi made a strong impression with the 2022 World Cup championship. As for Mbappe, the French striker still won the domestic title, but his achievements in the national team are worse than M10.
The "Best Men's Player" shortlist does not include Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo. He was also ruled out of the 2023 Ballon d'Or race. Ronaldo won his first FIFA Best award in 2016, then again in 2017, but has not made the top three shortlist since 2020.
In addition, in the category of best male coach of the year, new Tottenham coach Ange Postecoglou is nominated with Pep Guardiola, Simone Inzaghi, Luciano Spalletti and Xavi.
Goalkeepers Ederson and Andre Onana, Thibaut Courtois, Yassine Bounou and Marc-Andre ter Stegen will compete for the Best Men's Goalkeeper award.
The Best voters are coaches, captains of national teams under FIFA and sports journalists. In addition, fans can also vote for this award on the homepage of the World Football Federation. The award review period is from December 19, 2022 to August 10, 2023./.
