FIFA announces nominations for The Best 2023.

The Best is an annual award established by FIFA in 2016 to honor the best individuals in world football. It replaced the Ballon d'Or award after FIFA transferred the title to France Football magazine.

Notably, FIFA announced 12 nominees for the Best Men's Player award categories, including: Lionel Messi, Rodri, Gundogan, Bernardo Silva, Julian Alvarez, Kevin de Bruyne and Erling Haaland, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Victor Osimhen, Marcelo Brozovic, Declan Rice and Kylian Mbappe.

In this list of nominees, the three strongest contenders are Erling Haaland, Mbappe, and Messi. Erling Haaland is the top scorer in the Premier League, the Champions League, and won the treble with Manchester City. Meanwhile, Messi made a strong impression with his victory in the 2022 World Cup. As for Mbappe, the French striker still won titles in the domestic league, but his achievements with the national team are less impressive than Messi's.

The list of "Best Male Player" does not include Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo. He was also excluded from the 2023 Ballon d'Or race. Ronaldo won his first FIFA Best award in 2016, followed by another in 2017, but has not made it into the top 3 shortlists since 2020.

Additionally, in the category of best male coach of the year, Tottenham's new manager Ange Postecoglou was nominated alongside Pep Guardiola, Simone Inzaghi, Luciano Spalletti, and Xavi.

Goalkeepers Ederson and Andre Onana, Thibaut Courtois, Yassine Bounou and Marc-Andre ter Stegen will compete for the Best Men's Goalkeeper award.

Those participating in the voting for The Best include coaches, captains of national teams affiliated with FIFA, and sports journalists. In addition, fans can also vote for this award on the FIFA website. The judging period is from December 19, 2022 to August 10, 2023.
