FIFA speaks out amid US-Iran tensions.

FIFA has affirmed its goal of organizing a safe World Cup with the participation of all national teams, amid escalating military conflict between the US and Iran.

The 2026 World Cup is looming over a potential US-Iran conflict.

Following US and Israeli airstrikes targeting several Iranian cities, including Tehran, and Tehran's retaliatory missile strikes, questions quickly arose about the impact on this summer's World Cup.

Iran secured their fourth consecutive World Cup qualification spot starting in March 2025. The team is scheduled to play their group stage matches in June, facing New Zealand and Belgium in Los Angeles, followed by a clash with Egypt in Seattle. They are planned to be based at the Kino Sports Complex in Tucson, Arizona.

In light of the new developments, FIFA stated that it is closely monitoring the situation. Speaking at a meeting of the International Football Association Board (IFAB) in Wales, FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafstrom said: “I read the news this morning, like everyone else. It is too early to comment in detail. But we will be following developments around the world .”

He emphasized: "We held the draw in Washington with all the teams participating. FIFA's goal is a safe World Cup with all teams in attendance."

Currently, Iranian citizens remain on the list of those restricted from entering the US under the executive order issued in June 2025. However, this rule has exceptions for athletes, coaches, coaching staff members, and immediate family members traveling to attend major sporting events such as the World Cup.

However, last year there was a case where some Iranian representatives were denied visas before the World Cup draw. At that time, Andrew Giuliani, head of President Donald Trump's task force on the 2026 World Cup, said that all visa decisions were related to national security.

Iran's head coach, Amir Ghalenoei, expressed his confidence in FIFA after the draw, asserting that the organization would strive to ensure the entire team could participate in the tournament.

The current security situation is also impacting many other sporting events in the region. Several football matches in Israel and Qatar have been postponed. Qatari broadcaster beIN Sports has had to move its Premier League commentary production to London.

Meanwhile, the World Cup organizers in Los Angeles said they are closely monitoring the latest developments. At this time, FIFA maintains a clear position: the World Cup must take place safely and with all the qualifying teams present.
