Winnie the Pooh, the lovable bear character associated with the childhood of many generations of readers, is about to turn 100 years old, according to the Japan Times .
This character first appeared in 1926 in the book of the same name by British author AA Milne, with illustrations by artist EH Shepard. The image of Pooh was inspired by the stuffed animal collection of Christopher Robin, the author's son.
Disney, which has owned the rights to Pooh since the 1960s, is planning a series of celebratory events that will last throughout 2026. According to Kevin Kern, senior research manager at Walt Disney Archives, Pooh's appeal stems from his relatable personality and the simple lessons the character offers.
Two years after Pooh's debut, the tiger character Tigger appeared in The House at Pooh Corner , completing the familiar group of friends including Piglet, Eeyore, Owl, Rabbit, Kanga, and Roo. In 1966, Disney released the first animated film about Pooh, establishing the image of the red-shirted bear that had become so familiar to audiences worldwide.

For nearly a century, Winnie the Pooh has appeared in dozens of books, films, toys, and merchandise. The most recent film adaptation is Christopher Robin (2018), starring Ewan McGregor as the adult Christopher Robin reunited with his childhood friend.
Beyond its role in popular culture, Pooh has often become an unexpected phenomenon. In 1972, Disneyland even held a humorous campaign for Pooh to "run" for president of the United States. In the 2010s, the character appeared in numerous political cartoons related to Chinese President Xi Jinping, leading to censorship of related content on the internet in China.
After part of the original copyright expired in 2023, Winnie the Pooh continued to be exploited in various ways. That same year, the character appeared in the low-budget horror film Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey , which garnered attention for exceeding box office expectations.
According to animator Mark Henn, who worked on the 2011 Winnie the Pooh film, the character's vitality lies in his calmness and optimism. "Pooh always brings joy. Even when in trouble, he maintains a composure that many people can relate to," he said.
