According to The Verge , Gemini users will no longer have to remind the AI chatbot of what was discussed previously. A recent update has allowed Gemini to automatically save users' "important details and preferences," thereby personalizing responses in subsequent chat sessions.
This feature expands on a capability Google introduced last year, which required users to proactively ask Gemini to remember personal information. Now, the memorization process will happen automatically. For example, if a Gemini user previously searched for YouTube channel ideas about Japanese culture, the chatbot could suggest content related to Japanese cuisine when searching for new ideas.
This move comes as other AI platforms are also deploying memory features. In April, OpenAI's ChatGPT introduced cross-chat memory, but this was accompanied by an increase in reports of "fantasy" content. The tech giant later said it was adding measures to detect users' mental or emotional stress levels.
Speaking to the New York Times , Google spokesperson Elijah Lawal affirmed that the company is “continuously” improving user protections. “Our focus is on building a personalized AI assistant. Gemini needs to understand your preferences, but also provide you with the option to control the experience, to turn it on or off at any time,” Lawal said.
According to Google, the reminder feature will be enabled by default, but users can disable it in the "personal context" section of the Gemini app. The update began rolling out to Gemini 2.5 Pro in select countries on August 14th, before expanding to Gemini 2.5 Flash.
Along with that, Google is adjusting privacy settings. In the next few weeks, the “Gemini app activity” section will be renamed to “keep active”. When this option is enabled starting September 2nd, Google may use user-uploaded file and photo templates to improve the service for everyone. If “Gemini app activity” is already disabled, the “keep active” setting will be off by default.
Additionally, Gemini adds a “temporary chat” mode. These conversations are not saved in recent history, are not used for personalization or AI training, and only last for a maximum of 72 hours. Google says this is a suitable option when users want to exchange private questions or avoid having their information referenced in the future.
