Coach Amorim's position remains precarious.

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên22/02/2025

Playing away at Everton's Goodison Park, manager Amorim and Manchester United are under immense pressure. Since succeeding Erik ten Hag in November 2024, Amorim and the "Red Devils" have lost 9, drawn 3, and won only 9 matches. In the Premier League alone, the 40-year-old has a win rate of 28.57% – the lowest among the 11 managers who have led MU in the Premier League era, including interim managers. This disappointing performance has seen MU drop to 15th place with 29 points, one point behind Everton. Furthermore, a failure to win this match could see the relegation zone close in on them.

On the opposite side, the home team Everton are brimming with confidence. Since bringing back manager David Moyes, Everton have won four and drawn one of their last six matches. Although they haven't been able to beat MU in their four previous encounters, the 61-year-old manager insists that this is the perfect time for him and his players to change history.

Manager Amorim is on the verge of being sacked after a series of disappointing results with Manchester United.

Everton dominated MU, leading 2-0 after the first half.

True to manager David Moyes' statements, Everton dominated and overwhelmed Manchester United throughout the first half. The Goodison Park side only held possession for 45% but constantly created scoring opportunities, taking eight shots (twice as many as Manchester United). In the 19th minute, taking advantage of a scramble in the penalty area, striker Beto fired a close-range shot to open the scoring for Everton. Not stopping there, in the 39th minute, Abdoulaye Doucoure punished Manchester United's indecisiveness with an accurate header, doubling the lead.

Conversely, MU were ineffective throughout the first half and failed to register a single shot on target. The midfield trio of Bruno Fernandes, Casemiro, and Manuel Ugarte played poorly, frequently losing possession inexplicably. When Everton attacked, MU's midfield couldn't keep up to support the defense. Meanwhile, the attacking duo of Rasmus Højlund and Joshua Zirkzee were constantly starved of the ball, forced to play with their backs to Everton's goal.

MU continued to have a disastrous first half.

Witnessing Manchester United's disastrous first-half performance, Daily Mail writer Harry Bamforth commented: "The events on the pitch against Everton accurately reflect Manchester United's weak performance in the 2024-2025 season. The Red Devils took to the field without any desire to win. They were like programmed machines, just chasing the ball. The two goals they conceded came far too easily, with five defenders on the pitch showing no connection to each other."

Worse still, from the start of the match, the Manchester United team ran out of attacking ideas. As usual, Amorim was seen holding his head in his hands, looking dejected on the sidelines. Perhaps the Portuguese manager is now finally understanding the pain that his predecessors, such as Erik ten Hag and Ole Solskjaer, experienced.”

Coach Amorim and his players are getting closer and closer to falling into the relegation zone.

A classic second half for MU.

Trailing 2-0 after the first half, Manchester United were forced to take risks and play offensively in the second half. However, the visitors remained frustrated and struggled to get close to Everton's goal. It wasn't until a moment of individual brilliance from Bruno Fernandes in the 72nd minute that MU finally pulled one back. From a free kick nearly 25 meters out, the MU captain unleashed a superb shot that left goalkeeper Pickford rooted to the spot.

After scoring to reduce the deficit, MU's morale soared. In the 80th minute, Manuel Ugarte – one of the worst-performing players from the start of the match – was in the right place at the right time outside the penalty area to score the equalizer, making it 2-2 for MU.

The injury time saw an exciting back-and-forth battle between MU and Everton. In the 90+3 minute, Everton unexpectedly received a penalty. However, VAR intervened, overturning the penalty and allowing MU to finish the match with a 2-2 draw.

MU had a very lucky draw against Everton.

Having narrowly avoided defeat at Everton, Manchester United now have 30 points after 26 rounds. The Red Devils are still not safe, being only 13 points clear of the relegation zone (with 12 rounds remaining). Meanwhile, according to The Guardian , the future of manager Amorim is being seriously considered by the club's leadership following a series of disappointing results.
