Urea fertilizer prices have dropped sharply.

(DTO) In recent days, the price of urea fertilizer in the Mekong Delta region in general and Dong Thap province in particular has dropped sharply, helping farmers reduce the burden of production costs.

According to reports, about three months ago, fertilizer prices in Vietnam in general and in Dong Thap province in particular increased sharply. This was due to the impact of armed conflicts in the Middle East, which made importing raw materials very difficult.

Recently, tensions have eased, positively impacting the import of raw materials for fertilizer production. This has helped to gradually lower domestic fertilizer prices.

Mr. Nguyen Van Ven's family (Nghia Chi hamlet, Tan Hoa commune, Dong Thap province) currently cultivates 5 acres of rice fields. This year, for the summer-autumn crop, his family sowed the Dai Thom 8 rice variety. The rice plants are now about 10 days old. According to Mr. Ven, at the time of sowing, he bought Ca Mau Urea fertilizer at a price of 800,000 VND per 50 kg bag.

Mr. Ven shared: "Previously, urea fertilizer cost nearly a million dong per bag, but the price has decreased now. However, this price is still high, while the price of rice remains low. With the current rice prices, farming yields very little profit; it's mostly just exchanging old money for new."

Urea prices have fallen sharply, while prices of some other fertilizers have remained relatively stable.

Having just finished sowing the summer-autumn rice crop, Mr. Tran Thanh Son's family (Go Cong Dong commune, Dong Thap province) ordered two bags of urea fertilizer and one bag of NPK fertilizer from an agricultural supply dealer. The urea fertilizer costs 780,000 VND per 50 kg bag; the NPK costs 1.1 million VND per 50 kg bag. Mr. Son expressed:

"The price of urea fertilizer has decreased by more than 200,000 VND per bag compared to two months ago. The prices of other fertilizers haven't decreased. Fertilizer prices this season are much higher than the winter-spring season, which is worrying. Because the yield this season isn't high, we don't know what the selling price will be."

Mr. Nguyen Van Ung, General Director of Nong Thuan Phat Trading Co., Ltd. (Trung An Ward, Dong Thap Province), said that the price of urea fertilizer has dropped sharply in recent days. Currently, the price of urea fertilizer has decreased by about 3,000 VND/kg compared to March 2026. The retail price of Ca Mau urea fertilizer is about 14,200 VND/kg, and Phu My urea fertilizer is about 13,800 VND/kg. Even so, compared to the time when armed conflicts occurred in the Middle East, the price of urea fertilizer is still high (almost 3,000 VND/kg higher).

Mr. Ung shared: “The price of urea fertilizer has decreased the most, potassium has decreased by about 400-500 VND/kg, while DAP has not decreased. Recently, high fertilizer prices led to slow consumption as farmers used fertilizer sparingly. The decrease in fertilizer prices is due to the easing of tensions in the Middle East. Favorable conditions for raw material imports have led to lower fertilizer prices. It is predicted that if the current situation continues, fertilizer prices will continue to fall in the coming period.”

The decrease in urea fertilizer prices at a time when many localities are producing their summer-autumn crops is seen as a positive sign for farmers. However, in the context of still low rice prices and high production costs, producers still hope for further decreases in agricultural input prices to improve farming efficiency.
