NDO - In recent days, Thanh Nhan Hospital has admitted dozens of children with measles. Among them, there are children with measles who are not old enough to be vaccinated; some children have not been fully vaccinated, and some have missed shots.
At the Pediatrics Department, Thanh Nhan Hospital, the hospital beds are full because of the large number of children with respiratory diseases being admitted to the hospital. The treatment area for children with measles is separated to avoid infection.
While taking care of her child in the hospital for measles, Ms. Dinh Thi Phuong (in Hoang Liet, Hoang Mai, Hanoi ) said that her child was hospitalized with a persistent fever. The fever lasted for 5 days, with red rashes and rashes all over his body. He was tested and diagnosed with measles. When he was admitted to the hospital, he had complications including laryngitis. "For a long time, the family forgot to vaccinate him against measles, so we were quite worried," Ms. Phuong said.
According to Ms. Phuong, although her child was vaccinated with many types of vaccines, her family was complacent and skipped the measles shot.
Dr. Nghiem Thi Mai Sang, Head of the Pediatrics Department, Thanh Nhan Hospital, said: In the past month, the hospital has received and treated nearly 40 patients with measles. Most of the children were admitted with high fever, cough and runny nose. These are also symptoms of respiratory tract infection, similar to many diseases. Some children with fever and rash were tested to diagnose measles.

The number of children with measles recorded is mainly children aged 4 months to 8 years old. Many children when hospitalized had complications of pneumonia, laryngitis, no severe cases such as encephalitis have been recorded.
Many children with measles are not old enough to be vaccinated; some are not fully vaccinated; some miss shots.
Regarding the increase in measles, measles has been recorded as a cyclical outbreak, with a strong measles outbreak occurring every 10 years. In Hanoi, 2024 is also the year of the predicted outbreak, following the measles outbreak in 2014.
The cause of the measles epidemic is also due to factors such as: The current winter-spring weather is a favorable environment for the measles virus to develop and spread. In addition, immunity due to measles vaccination in children has not been produced or the immunity of children is not good. In particular, the incubation period and progression of measles are quite long, leading to a long period of infection. The accurate diagnosis of measles is usually when the child has a rash and the family can isolate the child.
Doctors also note that when vaccinating children against measles, after only one injection, the vaccine's effectiveness can drop below 80%; after two injections, the body produces antibodies that reach 90% - 95% of the vaccine's effectiveness.
Doctors also recommend that families pay attention to the measles vaccination schedule and give their children enough doses according to instructions so that they have full immunity against the disease.
Not only measles, Thanh Nhan Hospital also recorded an increase in dengue fever cases. Experts recommend that, in addition to fully vaccinating according to the expanded vaccination schedule, people should vaccinate their children against influenza and pneumococcal diseases if they have the conditions. As soon as children show symptoms such as cough, runny nose, high fever that is difficult to reduce, convulsions, loss of appetite, difficulty breathing, wheezing, etc., parents should quickly take their children to the hospital for doctors to advise and guide them to avoid the disease from progressing seriously.
