Observations in Tran Van Thoi district (Ca Mau province) show that the winter-spring rice crop has been harvested with an average yield of about 6.4 tons/ha. However, farmers are facing rising prices of rice seeds and agricultural supplies ahead of the summer-autumn crop.
Mr. Nguyen Van Em, residing in Khanh Binh Tay Bac commune, said that the winter-spring rice crop has been harvested and he is waiting until the end of April to plant the summer-autumn crop. "The price of rice seeds I plan to buy has now risen to 24,000 VND/kg, compared to only 22,000 VND/kg last year. I haven't bought fertilizers and pesticides yet, but I heard the prices have also increased by about 10% compared to the same period last year," Mr. Em said.
Similarly, Mr. Huynh Van Dau, residing in Khanh Binh commune, said that the price of supplies such as fertilizer and rice seeds has increased by about 2,000 VND/kg compared to the end of the winter-spring crop season. "During the main season, demand is high, so prices usually go up. Those who buy on credit and only pay at the end of the season may see prices increase by 30%. If there are risks such as natural disasters or crop failure, then there is virtually no profit," Mr. Dau shared.
According to the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Tran Van Thoi district, the entire district planted over 28,900 hectares of rice in the 2024-2025 winter-spring crop. Farmers earned an estimated profit of 30-40 million VND/hectare. However, in the past winter-spring season, the price of rice was about 1,000 VND/kg lower than in previous years, while production costs for 1 hectare accounted for about 50% of the total harvest, equivalent to about 30 million VND, including costs for plowing, harvesting, fertilizer, pesticides, seeds, etc.
"Farmers mainly rely on their labor for profit. If the price of supplies increases while the price of rice doesn't, the risk of losses is very high," said Mr. Nguyen Viet Khai, deputy head of the District's Agriculture and Environment Department. Some cooperatives have partnered with businesses to purchase supplies directly from the source, helping to reduce costs compared to buying locally. However, most farmers still buy in small quantities and pay later, increasing production costs.
In An Giang province, the Department of Agriculture and Environment reported that over 217,800 hectares of winter-spring rice have been harvested so far, reaching 95.5% of the planted area. The average yield reached 7.51 tons/ha, an increase of 0.12 tons/ha compared to the same period last year. Prices for popular rice varieties such as IR50404 and OM380 ranged from 5,800 to 6,000 VND/kg; OM5451 from 6,200 to 6,400 VND/kg; and OM18 and Dai Thom 8 from 6,700 to 7,000 VND/kg. Overall, rice prices showed a slight upward trend compared to March.
The provincial agricultural sector is inspecting the quality of fertilizers and agricultural supplies and implementing the "1 million hectares of high-quality, low-emission rice" project, aiming to reduce input costs and protect the environment.
