To achieve their goals, many people have opted for "miracle" weight loss methods that lack scientific basis. This is very dangerous as it can cause many serious health consequences.
"A double-edged sword"
After giving birth, Ms. NTT (residing in Tan Trieu ward, Dong Nai province) gained 10kg compared to her pre-pregnancy weight. Even after her maternity leave ended, her weight remained high, while her job at the bank required her to maintain a presentable appearance. Ms. T. searched online for information on weight loss and was introduced to several types of fast-acting weight loss pills.

“A friend introduced me to a weight-loss tea, a light green powder. The advertisement sounded appealing, so I immediately ordered a box of 10 packets for 500,000 VND. In the first few days of drinking the weight-loss tea, I felt my throat was constantly dry and I craved water, but I also had no appetite and didn't want to eat rice. As a result, I lost 1kg in the first three days. Before I could even celebrate the rapid weight loss, I felt dizzy and lightheaded in the following days, and I no longer had the energy to take care of my children,” Ms. T. confided.
Also hoping to lose weight quickly, Ms. D.T.H. (residing in Tran Bien ward, Dong Nai province) is planning to go to a beauty clinic in Ho Chi Minh City for liposuction.
Ms. H. said: "Seeing the video clips of cosmetic clinics performing liposuction on clients posted on social media was so appealing, I wanted to get liposuction to lose weight quickly."
Undeniably, rapid weight loss yields immediate results, boosting self-confidence, especially when a quick change in appearance is needed (such as before a photoshoot, performance, or event). However, most rapid weight loss methods primarily result in water loss rather than actual fat reduction. Furthermore, some weight-loss pills and teas sold online may contain banned substances, increasing the risk of high blood pressure, heart rhythm disorders, and stroke. Liposuction, on the other hand, can cause complications such as bleeding, hematomas, infections, scarring, altered abdominal sensation, and uneven skin tone. In some cases, complications from anesthesia or sedation can lead to allergic reactions or anaphylactic shock.
It is necessary to follow a scientific approach to weight loss.
According to Ms. Nguyen Thi Huong, Head of the Nutrition and Dietetics Department at Hoan My Dong Nai Hospital: Some methods, such as intermittent fasting or short-term carbohydrate reduction, can help improve blood sugar or blood lipid levels in some obese individuals. However, these methods are not really suitable for people with underlying conditions such as diabetes or gastritis. Excessive energy reduction (<800 kcal/day), or completely eliminating carbohydrates or fats, can lead to a range of negative consequences such as metabolic disorders, hypoglycemia, electrolyte imbalances, weakened immunity, hair loss, dull skin, irregular menstruation, increased risk of gallstones, osteoporosis, and depression.
“The hospital has received many patients admitted due to electrolyte imbalances, physical exhaustion, and digestive disorders caused by unscientific weight loss diets. Some people lost 5-7 kg in two weeks but then gained back double that amount when they stopped the diet. This is called the ‘yo-yo effect,’ causing metabolic disorders and increasing the risk of chronic diseases,” shared Ms. Huong.
According to recommendations from the World Health Organization and the American Nutrition Association, safe weight loss should be 0.5-1 kg per week and must ensure adequate intake of all essential nutrients.
To lose weight safely, Master's degree holder Nguyen Thi Huong recommends that people adhere to three principles: gradually reduce energy intake (by 500-700 kcal/day compared to daily needs); increase physical activity to at least 150 minutes/week, combining aerobic and resistance training; and maintain a balanced diet: sufficient protein, healthy fats, fiber, vitamins, and minerals.
"People should seek examination and consultation at medical facilities or hospitals with nutrition specialists before applying any weight loss method; especially those with underlying conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or dyslipidemia. Attempting rapid weight loss on your own can lead to unpredictable consequences," emphasized Ms. Huong.
Weight loss is a journey that requires time, knowledge, and patience. There is no "miracle" method that is both safe and sustainable. Instead of chasing quick results, experts advise those intending to lose weight to choose a healthy lifestyle, eat scientifically, limit sugar (soft drinks and pastries...), drink plenty of water every day, eat enough green vegetables and fruits, and exercise regularly. That is the real "secret" to having a healthy and beautiful figure and a balanced, healthy body.
