Master's degree holder Le Minh Huan, a psychology expert, talks to students.

Following the incident where a student cornered a teacher and hurled insults at her, Master Le Minh Huan, Director of the An Nhien Center for Applied Psychology and Education , and former lecturer in the Psychology Department at Ho Chi Minh City University of Education, shared his thoughts with a reporter from Thanh Nien Newspaper.

How will teachers and students get back on their feet after this "crushing fall"?

What were your initial feelings when you saw the images and heard the words in the aforementioned clip, sir?

I was heartbroken watching the clip. I felt sympathy for the teacher's helplessness as she faced the challenges and humiliation from the students alone. Regardless of any wrongdoing she may have committed, as a teacher, she deserves to be respected in her role and position.

The Ministry of Education and Training issues urgent directive regarding the incident where a group of students cornered their teacher and hurled insults at her.

I feel a mixture of anger, pity, and worry for the generation of students, the future builders of our country. If, due to resentment, frustration, oppression, or unfair punishment/discipline, they act impulsively, lacking respect for their teachers, and exhibit arrogant and disrespectful behavior, where will their future education and character development lead? How will they, and their teacher, recover from this devastating fall and face public opinion?

The female teacher was cornered against the wall by a student who then issued a challenge.

Although the true story behind the video is unknown, what is your assessment of students' behavior towards teachers in the educational environment?

The words, actions, and attitudes of the students towards the teacher in the clip are certainly not the outcome any educator or parent would want. This behavior goes against the general purpose of education and what is taught. Their bad behavior, impulsiveness, disagreements, mockery, and lack of respect for the teacher have lowered the image of these students; they have lost their own image as true learners, causing significant negative consequences for the image of the classroom, the school, and the family.

Is this a consequence of "student-centered" education?

Is this perhaps a consequence of our current approach to education, which many believe is student-centered?

Student-centered learning is a progressive teaching method that adheres to the principle of being tailored to individual students, providing personalized education based on their interests, personalities, strengths, and weaknesses. In this approach, the teacher acts as a guide and director, while the learner decides/chooses the content and format with the teacher's support.

This is not an endorsement of lax, liberal, irregular, negligent, or superficial education. Furthermore, a successful education system is not without its failures, and vice versa. Therefore, the view that this represents a failure of education is inaccurate.

It's true that some children make mistakes, are unruly, rebellious, and act rudely, but schools, families, and society should not refuse to educate them. Instead, they should strive to improve their behavior, foster healthier awareness, and help them become more useful members of society. School education is not about tailoring a student to a mold that perfectly matches society's expectations.

The key takeaway here is: where have the educational processes for children gone wrong up to this point? Have families been attentive to and recognized their children's "bad behavior" or poor emotional control? How firm and strict has the school been in rewarding and punishing students? Has this been a release or a buildup of frustration and stress? Have teachers made mistakes but acknowledged them and corrected their behavior in good faith? An emotional outburst in an individual can be easily explained, but when an entire group of students compromises with wrongdoing and misconduct, it's crucial to re-examine the educational process and the coordination between educational forces: family, school, and society.

According to him, what actions should parents take to educate their children?

Following this incident, parents need to act quickly and decisively to correct the behavior and attitude of their children, especially those at an age when they are growing up, becoming rebellious and difficult to manage. Any leniency will have immeasurable consequences for the development and maturation of a child's personality.

Things parents can do to educate their children.

  • Sit down and listen carefully to everything your child has to say about the incident.
  • Let's analyze and re-examine the inappropriate, wrong, and deviant words, attitudes, and behaviors of the child. At the same time, clearly explain to the child the consequences that have occurred, are occurring, and will occur to the child, the teacher, those involved, and especially the level of public opinion.
  • We are determined to cooperate with the school and educational authorities to rectify the mistakes.
  • Present or discuss with your child future directions and behavioral solutions for them to consider and implement, while observing and evaluating their progress.
  • Encourage your child to take responsibility for their actions and, at the same time, observe and provide psychological support when needed. Although your child is wrong, they need to be given the opportunity to change for the better.
  • Avoid shaming, humiliating, using violence, or punishing children emotionally or subjectively… to prevent creating unnecessary psychological pressure on them.
