| Clean up the city center streets. |
In the days leading up to Tet (Lunar New Year), people in both urban and rural areas are busy shopping, cleaning, and decorating their homes. Along with this hectic pace, the amount of household waste increases rapidly, especially in traditional markets, spring festival areas, and densely populated residential areas. With the volume of waste many times greater than usual, waste collection needs to be implemented quickly and efficiently to avoid accumulation of waste that detracts from urban aesthetics and creates unpleasant odors at collection points and residential areas.
To ensure urban sanitation during the Tet holiday, from the beginning of February, HEPCO mobilized its entire workforce; hiring additional personnel and vehicles and equipment to collect waste throughout the city. Garbage compactors, sprayers, and garbage collectors were flexibly deployed to different areas, prioritizing those generating large amounts of waste. Public trash bins were also cleaned, washed, and rearranged. Collection frequency increased compared to normal days, focusing on peak hours after markets close and during peak evening trading. Many sanitation teams were assigned to work overtime, collecting waste in a staggered manner to prevent accumulation and reduce the workload during the peak days from the 27th of the 12th lunar month to the 3rd day of Tet.
Many central streets such as Tran Hung Dao, Le Duan, Le Loi, Hanoi ... have been cleaned by street sweeping and vacuuming, street washing, sidewalk cleaning, bridge cleaning, and median strip cleaning. In areas around spring flower markets, spring festivals, fireworks displays, and other places with large crowds of people and tourists during Tet, HEPCO will deploy permanent cleaning staff. After cultural and entertainment events, sanitation workers will collect garbage to quickly restore clean spaces to streets, squares, and parks.
In the days leading up to Tet (Lunar New Year), the amount of waste generated is 3.5 to 4 times higher than usual, causing sanitation workers' collection work to extend until the early morning of the first day of Tet. To avoid congestion at collection points, from the 23rd day of the 12th lunar month, the waste collection schedule is adjusted to start earlier than usual.

| HEPCO organizes overtime shifts to ensure environmental hygiene during Tet holiday. |
HEPCO advises people to take their trash out before 9 PM on New Year's Eve; not to take trash out on the first and second days of Tet (Lunar New Year); and not to throw trash with burning embers into trash cans to avoid fires and explosions. In addition, HEPCO encourages people to practice simple waste sorting at source, separating organic waste, recyclable waste, and non-biodegradable waste to facilitate collection and transportation during the peak Tet season, contributing to reducing the pressure on post-collection waste treatment. The company also reminds residents and tourists to refrain from littering in public areas, especially during crowded times after festivals and celebrations, thereby sharing the burden with sanitation workers and maintaining urban aesthetics.
During the 2026 Lunar New Year holiday, HEPCO has developed a plan for increased on-call duty on New Year's Eve and the first few days of the new year, especially 24/7 duty at key departments. HEPCO has identified New Year's Eve and the morning of the first day of the Lunar New Year as periods when waste generation surges after festive activities and large gatherings. Therefore, collection teams have been reinforced with additional personnel and vehicles to ensure waste is collected immediately during the night or from early morning, preventing waste from accumulating into the first day of the new year.
“Maintaining urban sanitation and environmental hygiene during Tet (Lunar New Year) is a top priority, so we developed our Tet service plan early, increasing the frequency of waste collection and deploying personnel to work throughout the holiday. The goal is to keep urban spaces clean and airy during the first days of the year, contributing to a clean and beautiful image of the city in the eyes of residents and tourists,” shared Mr. Tran Huu An, Deputy General Director of HEPCO.
HEPCO also strengthened coordination with local authorities in disseminating information and reminding residents and businesses to dispose of waste at the correct time and place. At the same time, together with local authorities, they organized general cleaning campaigns before Tet (Lunar New Year) in residential areas and streets to help clean living spaces and contribute to raising community awareness about maintaining the urban environment during holidays and Tet.
