The gong ensemble of the Muong ethnic group in Xuan Du commune serves both community activities and passes on cultural identity to the younger generation.
Mr. Nguyen Dinh Khuong, head of Bai Da 2 village, said: "The village has 93% Muong ethnic minority people. Recognizing the important role of Muong cultural identity in the spiritual life of the people, the village has actively mobilized and propagated the preservation and promotion of traditional cultural values. At the same time, we organize cultural and artistic activities to educate the younger generation to be aware of preserving the cultural values of the ethnic group. As a result, the traditional cultural values of the Muong people are preserved, promoted, and have a strong influence on the spiritual life of the people in the village."
A distinctive feature of the Muong cultural space in Xuan Du is the sound of gongs and drums, closely associated with important rituals in the lives of the local people. Currently, many families and clans in the commune still preserve valuable sets of gongs and drums that are over a century old. To prevent the art of gong and drum playing from fading away, the commune has established three gong and drum teams and clubs to serve community activities and teach the younger generation how to play them.
Aware of the school's responsibility in preserving and promoting the value of historical relics, Xuan Du Secondary School always focuses on educating students about the value of these relics by integrating them into subjects such as History and Geography. At the same time, the school invites artisans and experts in Muong culture to teach folk songs and gong playing techniques to the students.
Mr. Han Viet An, Principal of Xuan Du Secondary School, said: "When students understand the identity of their ethnic group, they will appreciate and engage in practical activities to preserve and promote traditional cultural values. In the future, the school will continue to integrate the content of Muong ethnic culture education into extracurricular activities and local education subjects. At the same time, we will encourage the opening of classes to stage unique Muong cultural performances to be presented during festivals. This is the environment and space for the younger generation to practice and spread the cultural heritage of their ethnic group."
Through the synchronized implementation of various solutions, the cultural values of the Muong ethnic group in Xuan Du are being preserved and strongly disseminated in the spiritual life of the people. Along with maintaining their language in daily communication and wearing traditional clothing during festivals and holidays, the Muong people in Xuan Du also focus on preserving the traditional brocade weaving craft. Furthermore, the beautiful customs and traditions of the Muong people have been restored and incorporated into the regulations and customs of the villages.
Mr. Bui Duc Chinh, Head of the Culture and Social Affairs Department of Xuan Du Commune People's Committee, said: "The commune will continue to promote propaganda work and raise people's awareness of the significance of preserving and promoting the cultural identity of the Muong ethnic group. We will direct schools to organize extracurricular lessons on preserving the culture of the Muong ethnic group. We will actively encourage artisans and influential people to participate in preserving the ethnic cultural identity; organize many competitions, performances, and cultural and artistic exchanges to create playgrounds for the people. In particular, the commune will focus on organizing the Phu Na Festival with cultural and artistic activities that are rich in Muong cultural identity, creating an environment for people to interact and connect, contributing to promoting the movement of 'All people unite to build a cultured life'."
