Keeping the classroom lights on in the remote Sín Chải

In the mountainous commune of Sin Chai (Dien Bien province), keeping students in school is sometimes even more difficult than teaching. Yet, for many years, Sin Chai Ethnic Boarding Junior High School has consistently maintained brightly lit classrooms every day – a result of the persistent leadership of the school's Party branch and the tireless efforts of the teachers in this remote area.

Every morning, students from remote villages cross the mountains to get to school. For many, the road to class is still long and fraught with obstacles, as people's lives remain difficult, transportation is limited, and the risk of dropping out is ever-present.

In light of this situation, the Party Committee of Sin Chai Ethnic Boarding Junior High School has identified maintaining student enrollment numbers as a central and ongoing task in the school's leadership.

According to Mr. Do Van Nam, the school's Party branch secretary, all tasks are concretized through resolutions, with clear responsibilities assigned to each Party member. Party members must take the lead in difficult tasks such as encouraging students to attend classes, caring for boarding students, and innovating teaching methods.

"When teachers set a good example, parents and students will have more trust in the school," Mr. Nam shared.

Through this persistent approach, teachers regularly visit each village to encourage students to attend school and coordinate with local authorities to support the lives of boarding students. As a result, the attendance rate has consistently remained above 99% for many years, and the dropout rate has decreased to 0.4% — a figure of great significance for a school in a mountainous region.

Beyond simply keeping students in class, the school's Party branch has identified improving the quality of education as its long-term goal.

Political and ideological education and professional ethics training are regularly maintained; for many consecutive years, no teachers have violated industry regulations. With 22 Party members, the Party branch has become a core force in professional innovation.

The school is promoting the application of information technology and innovating teaching methods to develop students' competencies. The quality of education is gradually improving; the percentage of good and excellent students has increased over the years, and the number of weak students has almost disappeared.

Students from the school have won numerous awards in science and technology competitions, academic excellence awards, and various arts, sports, and cultural activities at the district and provincial levels.

Young teacher A Mang, who recently joined the Party, shared that being in the Party ranks is not only an honor but also a responsibility that requires even greater effort.

In mountainous regions, teachers not only teach literacy but also become companions, helping students overcome difficulties to continue their education.

"The image of students persistently attending class every day is what motivates young teachers to choose to stay in Sin Chai for the long term," said Mr. Mang.

The school's progress has also been recognized by the local community. Mr. Giàng A Páo, Secretary of the Party Committee of Sín Chải commune, assessed the Party branch of Sín Chải Ethnic Boarding Secondary School as an effective grassroots Party organization, contributing to maintaining universal secondary education and raising the intellectual level of the people in the area.

Alongside their professional duties, the Youth Union and the Children's Union consistently maintain numerous activities to support disadvantaged students, build a friendly learning environment, and help students feel more connected to their school.

For many years, Sin Chai Ethnic Boarding Junior High School has been awarded the title of Outstanding Labor Collective at the provincial level and has received the Excellent Emulation Flag from the Ministry of Education and Training. However, according to the teachers, the greatest achievement lies not in the titles, but in the fact that every morning the classroom is still full of students, and the sound of reading echoes through the mountains.

From the leadership of the Party branch to the dedication of the teachers, this highland school is quietly opening the path to knowledge for many generations of students. Keeping students in the same class today is also about preserving the opportunity for development in Sin Chai tomorrow.
