Preserve forests for sustainable development.

Dong Nai City is entering a new phase of development. Many strategic infrastructure projects are being implemented, such as Long Thanh International Airport, expressways, ring roads, seaports, urban areas, and industrial zones. Therefore, the goal of double-digit growth is no longer just an expectation but has become a political objective for the city in 2026 and the years to come.

Despite being a city with a long history of industrial development spanning several decades, the locality still retains over 370,000 hectares of forest land, placing it among the localities with the largest forest area in the country. The natural forests in Dong Nai stretch from Cat Tien National Park and the Dong Nai Nature and Culture Reserve to Bu Gia Map National Park. This is not only the "green lung" of the Southeast region but also plays a crucial role in conserving biodiversity in the South and the entire country.

Nearly 30 years ago, Dong Nai closed its forests. Therefore, while many localities have had to spend large resources on planting and restoring forests, the city already had a large, relatively intact forest reserve. This is a significant advantage for Dong Nai's green growth in the future.

For many years, Dong Nai has consistently upheld the principle of not sacrificing the environment for economic growth. This principle is not always easy to implement, especially in the context of rapid urbanization. However, Dong Nai is determined to preserve its forests for sustainable development. By 2025, climate change will cause natural disasters and extreme weather events that will cost countries and territories worldwide more than $220 billion. In Vietnam alone, the estimated loss by 2025 is nearly $4 billion. Therefore, Vietnam, like other countries around the world, is committed to green development. One of the solutions to slow down the negative impacts of climate change and achieve sustainable development is planting and preserving forests to regulate the climate and maintain biodiversity.

According to economic experts, the value of forests is increasingly enhanced through conservation and rational exploitation in forms such as: developing forest ecotourism, collecting fees for the use of forest environmental services, etc. In the last 3-4 years, a carbon market has emerged globally , and Vietnam is currently piloting the sale of carbon credits. This opens up opportunities for localities with large forest areas, such as Dong Nai, to participate in selling carbon credits to generate additional investment for forest protection and development.

Listening to farmers to develop sustainable agriculture. The quality of agricultural supplies, market access for agricultural products, maintaining planting area codes, and capital needs are practical issues for farmers that were raised at the 2026 Dialogue Conference between the leaders of the Dong Nai City People's Committee and farmers.

However, opportunities only truly become resources when coupled with strict management. In recent years, ecotourism has been seen as a promising direction. But without control, spontaneous construction or excessive exploitation can damage ecosystems that take decades, even centuries, to form.

Therefore, the most important thing is not how much is exploited from the forest, but how much of the forest's value is preserved during the exploitation process. That is also why Dong Nai's development plans all aim to maintain forest area, conserve biodiversity, and strictly enforce regulations on reforestation when converting forest land for other uses.

In its pursuit of double-digit growth, Dong Nai needs more new resources. However, the existing 370,000 hectares of forest land are also a resource that needs to be preserved and effectively utilized, rather than being viewed solely from a conservation perspective.
