Google sells domain registration business to Squarespace

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên16/06/2023

Alphabet has signed a deal with Squarespace to sell domain registrations and related customer accounts from its Google Domains service, according to a Bloomberg report, which said the deal is worth $180 million.

The Android giant said that users' Google Domains accounts will not be affected immediately and they do not need to do anything. Once they receive regulatory approval, users will become Squarespace customers and their domains will be managed by Squarespace. At the time of the transition, linked Google Workspace services will be automatically managed by Squarespace, with some exceptions.

Users' domain registrations and DNS authorization will not be affected when moving to Squarespace. Customers will still be able to manage additional services (if applicable) through the management dashboard.

Abandoning the domain name business is one of Google's new restructuring efforts.

For Squarespace's part, the company said it estimates it will own about 10 million domains hosted on Google Domains from millions of customers.

This is seen as one of Google's efforts to increase focus when deciding to sell the domain registration business. Google Domains, launched in 2014 and a big supporter of HTTPS and top-level domains (TLDs), is leaving beta in 2022.

Squarespace said it will honor renewal prices for all current Google Domains customers for at least 12 months after the transaction closes. Notably, Squarespace will become the exclusive domain provider for any customers who purchase a domain name along with their Workspace subscription directly from Google for a minimum of three years.
