Typically, these hackers will call users with the information that their Gmail account has been compromised, creating panic by claiming that their personal data is at risk.

They then ask the victim to provide an account recovery code, claiming it's to restore the customer's account. When the victim shares the code, the hackers gain control of the Gmail account, leading to serious consequences such as identity theft and data loss.

Steps to protect your Gmail account

To protect your Gmail account, Google advises users never to share their recovery code with anyone, even if they claim to be Google support staff. Additionally, users should enable two-factor authentication (2FA) for enhanced security.

Google emphasizes that enabling 2FA is one of the most effective measures to protect accounts. Even if hackers obtain a user's password, they cannot log in without a second verification step.

If you have accidentally provided your recovery code, quickly take the following steps to protect your account:

• To change your password: Go to Settings on your Android device, select Google , and then select your Google account. Click on Manage your Google account > select the Security tab. Under How to sign in , select Password to change your password to a secure one.
• Reset password: If you are unable to access your account, select " Forgot my password" and proceed to answer the security questions to reset your password.
