Following the surge in demand during the Mid-Autumn Festival, food, groceries, and fresh flowers are gradually returning to stable prices , especially fruits. Supply remains abundant, but consumer demand has decreased.
Fresh flowers are currently being sold for 20,000-25,000 VND per bouquet.
According to surveys at several markets in Vi Thanh city and Long My district, items that were in high demand during the Mid-Autumn Festival, such as fresh flowers and fruits, have returned to stable prices. Ms. Nguyen Thi Kim Tuyen, a fresh flower vendor in Ward III, Vi Thanh city, said: “Generally, purchasing power during the Mid-Autumn Festival increased 2-3 times compared to normal. Before, I imported about 20 boxes of flowers (80 bunches per box), but by the afternoon of the 14th, they were all sold out. Due to the high demand, the price of fresh flowers increased slightly by 10,000-15,000 VND per bunch during the Mid-Autumn Festival, but now prices have stabilized again.”
Specifically, chrysanthemums of all kinds are priced from 20,000-25,000 VND/bunch, a decrease of about 20,000 VND/bunch; carnations are priced at 30,000 VND/bunch; and red gladiolus and white lilies are priced from 30,000-35,000 VND/dozen. After the full moon, some types of flowers double in price. According to many fresh flower vendors, during the major full moon festival, consumers tend to prefer chrysanthemums because although the price increases, they are still more affordable than other types. In addition, chrysanthemums stay fresh longer and retain their beautiful color whether placed outdoors or indoors. White lilies are also quite popular because of their fragrance, creating a solemn atmosphere when decorating the altar and lasting a long time.
Throughout the Mid-Autumn Festival (the 15th day of the 7th lunar month), the demand for fruit in the area, especially fruits used in religious ceremonies such as pomelo, mango, and dragon fruit, increased sharply. However, thanks to thorough preparation and increased supply from orchards in the province, the prices of these fruits only increased slightly, avoiding the major price surges seen in previous years.
Ms. Kim Son, a fruit vendor at Vi Thanh Market, Ward III, Vi Thanh City, said: “Many people are looking to buy specialty fruits from Hau Giang such as Cau Duc pineapples and Long Tri tangerines, however, the selling price remains stable thanks to good preservation and abundant production. Even during peak days, the price of these fruits only increases by 5,000-10,000 VND/kg, an increase considered reasonable given the high demand.”
However, some types of vegetables and root crops at the market still maintain high prices due to limited supply caused by rain affecting the quality of the produce; therefore, the selling price has increased slightly but not significantly. Mr. Huynh Minh Thich, a vegetable vendor at Kenh Tu market in Vinh Vien A commune, Long My district, shared: “After the full moon, the number of customers decreased significantly, but due to the weather affecting the supply, the price of straw mushrooms still fluctuates between 60,000-70,000 VND/kg; okra 18,000 VND/kg, cabbage 20,000-22,000 VND/kg, broccoli 18,000-20,000 VND/head, carrots 12,000 VND/kg, sweet cabbage from 14,000-16,000 VND/kg, lettuce 15,000-20,000 VND/kg, cucumbers from 13,000-18,000 VND/kg…”. Ms. Nguyen Thuy Nhanh, residing in Ward IV, Vi Thanh City, said: “Currently, when I go to the market, I no longer have to worry about traders raising prices. I can confidently buy groceries to stock up for the week for my family. The prices of meat and fish have increased, but not drastically.”
According to small traders, the prices of food items have stabilized, and the supply remains stable. Provincial departments and agencies have also intensified inspections and supervision at wholesale markets and retail outlets, helping to limit abnormal price increases and ensure product quality. Products sold on the market are thoroughly checked for food safety and hygiene, meeting the increased demand of consumers, especially during the upcoming September 2nd holiday.
