High profits

These days, the onion fields in An Phu commune are bustling with activity as the harvest takes place, and smiles of a bountiful harvest are always present on the faces of the farmers.

According to locals, this year's onion crop is considered a "double" success, with both a bountiful harvest and good prices. Thanks to favorable weather, the onions grew well, producing large, uniform bulbs with few pests and diseases, resulting in high quality. From the beginning of the harvest season, onion prices remained high, giving farmers peace of mind and enthusiasm.

The family of Ms. Pham Thi Dam, in An Luong village, is one of the relatively large-scale onion growers in the commune, with an area of about 1.2 acres. To date, the entire onion crop has been purchased by traders right in the field. Ms. Dam said that on average, each acre of onions sold for 13.5 million VND, the highest price in many years. After deducting expenses, the family has a significant profit, creating more motivation to continue cultivating onions in the following seasons. Sharing the joy of a good harvest and good prices, Ms. Dam said that this year the weather was favorable, the onion plants grew well, and the bulbs were of high quality and yield.

Sharing the joy, Mr. Le Dinh Hai from An Dong village said that when he prepared the land for planting onions around September 2025, heavy rains made the soil muddy, causing many difficulties in preparing the raised beds. However, the weather gradually improved, with suitable rainfall creating conditions for the onion plants to grow well, while also reducing weeds and minimizing labor. Mr. Hai's family's onion yield is estimated at 7-9 quintals per sao (approximately 1000 square meters), much higher than in previous years. Not only focusing on production, his family also invested in a drying oven, buying onions from other villagers to dry and sell. Each day, the drying oven can process 5-7 quintals of onions, helping his family increase income and contributing to the market for farmers during the peak harvest season.

According to many onion farmers, besides favorable weather, another major advantage of this crop is the low input costs, especially the lower price of onion seeds compared to previous years. This year, the onions in An Phu commune are of high quality, yielding a profit of 8-9 million VND per sao (approximately 1000 square meters).

According to Mr. Nguyen Hong Nguyen, Head of the Economic Department of An Phu commune, onions are currently the main winter crop of the commune, with an area of about 550 hectares, accounting for nearly two-thirds of the winter crop area in the locality.

To support local onion farmers, the Party Committee, People's Committee of An Phu commune, and the agricultural department have paid close attention and provided guidance. Planning of planting areas, guidance on planting seasons, and monitoring of product consumption have been implemented flexibly and appropriately to local conditions. The agricultural service cooperative provides fertilizers and pesticides on a deferred payment basis. Farmers only pay after harvesting the onions, helping to reduce the pressure of initial investment capital, especially for large-scale producers.

Thanks to the economic benefits, many households have boldly bought or leased more land to expand their onion cultivation area, gradually forming large-scale, concentrated production zones. Investment in post-harvest processes such as drying and preservation is also being encouraged to enhance product value and reduce dependence on fresh onion consumption.
