Coach Roberto De Zerbi and Marseille have reached an agreement to terminate his contract by mutual consent.

According to French media, the series of poor results has made the Italian strategist's position irreparable. Marseille will temporarily appoint an interim coach to lead the team while the management seeks a long-term solution for the coaching staff.

The decision to part ways with De Zerbi came after weeks of simmering internal tension, coupled with a serious decline in form. Heavy defeats, particularly the 0-3 loss to Club Brugge that eliminated Marseille from the Champions League, and the 0-5 defeat to PSG, were seen as the final straw.

President Pablo Longoria, Sporting Director Mehdi Benatia, and De Zerbi held private meetings with several players earlier this week. Through these discussions, the Marseille leadership realized that the relationship between the coach and the dressing room had seriously deteriorated. Therefore, the leadership unanimously agreed that De Zerbi should leave immediately.

De Zerbi joined Marseille in the summer of 2024 and had a positive start. In his first season, he helped the team finish second in Ligue 1, securing their return to the Champions League. However, his second season proved to be much more difficult.

Marseille currently sit 4th in Ligue 1, 12 points behind PSG and 10 points behind second-placed Lens, clearly reflecting a prolonged slump in form and internal instability within the team.
