Along Tran Dang Ninh street, especially near the entrance to the Provincial Youth Palace, the buying and selling of peach blossoms has become bustling these days. No signs or calls are needed; the beauty of the peach blossoms itself is enough to attract passersby. This is a familiar meeting place every year leading up to Tet (Lunar New Year), where many families visit to find a branch of peach blossoms they like, a habit that's hard to change when spring arrives.
Walking around admiring the flowers, we noticed that peach blossoms were being sold in all kinds, shapes, and sizes: from pink and red peach blossoms, shaped peach blossoms, bonsai peach blossoms to trees taller than a person or small potted peach blossoms for tables. Some branches had just budding, while others were already in full bloom. Layers of moss covering the roots and neatly tied branches showed the meticulous preparation of the gardeners months in advance, from stripping leaves, shaping, preserving buds, to timing the digging, potting, and bringing them to the street. Mr. Hoang Manh Tuan, from Tam Thanh ward, a peach blossom seller near the entrance of the Provincial Youth Palace, adjusted the ropes securing the roots of a peach tree while sharing: "This year the weather has been relatively favorable, the peach blossoms bloomed on time, with many buds and even flowers; the selling price is basically stable, ranging from a few hundred thousand to a few million dong per tree."
According to our research, the province currently has over 600 hectares of peach trees, concentrated in long-established growing areas such as Bac Son, Huu Lung, Cao Loc, Tam Thanh, and Luong Van Tri… For many households, peach trees are the main source of income at the end of each year. From the 15th day of the eighth lunar month, growers begin closely monitoring the weather, covering the roots, maintaining moisture, stripping leaves in stages, inhibiting bud development in each cycle, and regulating irrigation and fertilization to ensure the flowers bloom at the right time. Even a few days' deviation can change the value of the peach tree, and the fruits of months of care are consequently affected.
Thanks to its unique climate and soil conditions, Lang Son peach blossoms are increasingly asserting their position in the market. Low winter temperatures help the trees differentiate flower buds well, creating varieties such as white peach blossoms, pink peach blossoms, light pink peach blossoms, bell-shaped peach blossoms, and seven-inch peach blossoms with rich colors, thick petals, long-lasting blooms, and natural tree shapes. This is a unique advantage, difficult to confuse with peach blossoms grown in many other localities. As a result, peach blossoms are gradually becoming a distinctive agricultural product, contributing to expanding the economic and agricultural development of the province. Market reality shows that Lang Son peach blossoms not only serve the needs within the province but are also strongly consumed in many localities outside the province.
In peach orchards throughout the province, buying and selling activities are bustling these days. Many orchards have sold most, or even all, of their peach trees. Mr. Hoang Van Hoc, from Quang Hong village, Luong Van Tri ward, said: "My family has more than 400 peach trees; we started digging them up and potting them in late January to serve the Tet market. To date, all the peach trees in my orchard have been sold, mainly to Nghe An and Hanoi , at prices ranging from 400,000 to 800,000 VND per branch, and from 2 to 10 million VND per tree depending on its shape and age."
Not only the sellers, but also the buyers contribute to the bustling atmosphere of the peach blossom market in the days leading up to Tet. Mr. Nguyen Van Binh, from Ngoc Ha ward, Hanoi, shared: "For the past three years, before Tet, I've always gone to Lang Son to choose peach blossoms to bring back home. I like the light pink peach blossoms because the flowers are bright, the blossoms are dense, there are many buds, and the branches have a natural shape. The peach blossoms here have a very unique character; you can recognize them immediately."
As Tet (Lunar New Year) approaches, the bustling activity of buying and selling becomes more pronounced. In the evening, the warm yellow light casts a glow on the peach blossoms, painting the entire street in a gentle spring hue. Motorbikes line up, buyers bend down close to the branches, turning the pots, admiring the buds, and asking for prices. Some choose quickly, while others walk the entire street before returning to the same spot to make their decision. The empty spaces on the sidewalk are quickly filled with newly arrived peach trees.
"Every year, my family buys a peach blossom branch to decorate for Tet. Walking down the street and seeing so many peach blossoms on display, it suddenly feels like Tet is coming earlier, bringing joy and warmth," shared Ms. Hoang Bich Lien from Ky Lua ward. This feeling is shared by many when strolling through the peach blossom market these days, where the scent of damp earth from the tree roots, the sounds of bargaining, and laughter blend together to create a unique atmosphere of the days leading up to Tet.
In Lang Son, peach blossoms are more than just decorative flowers. The color of peach blossoms is associated with Tet (Lunar New Year) memories for many families across generations. Therefore, going to the peach blossom market is not simply about buying a decorative item, but about rediscovering the familiar Tet atmosphere deeply ingrained in the people's way of thinking. Amidst the ever-changing pace of life, the scene of buying and selling peach blossoms along the streets retains its familiar appearance from many years ago; only the peach trees themselves grow thicker and more beautiful each year, reflecting how peach growers cherish spring with both experience and dedication.
