There are many reasons why numerous M&A deals have yet to be finalized and publicly announced. Nevertheless, a vibrant and active market is a promising prospect for Vietnam's M&A sector in the near future.
On November 27th, the Investment Newspaper organized the 16th Vietnam Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A) Forum with the theme "Bustling Deals".
In his opening remarks at the Forum, Mr. Le Trong Minh, Editor-in-Chief of Investment Newspaper and Head of the Forum's Organizing Committee, stated that according to several international consulting and research organizations, the global M&A market in 2023 was considered the worst "bear market" in the past decade. The main reasons attributed to geopolitical instability and the global economic downturn led to a significant decline in both the value and volume of transactions.

Entering 2024, despite hopes for a resurgence, even a boom, M&A activity continues to resemble a dull "performance." Evidence of this is the slight increase in transaction value recorded in the first half of the year. However, transaction volume moved in the opposite direction compared to the same period last year. While the overall picture has shown some positive signs in recent months, it cannot yet be considered a definitive indication of a breakthrough in the near future.
Domestically, the announcement of numerous M&A deals since the beginning of the year, while not a single "blockbuster," has, to some extent, brought renewed excitement to the market after a rather sluggish year.
However, judging solely by the number and value of announced deals, and compared to the peak a few years ago, isn't it still premature to use the term "bustling" to describe Vietnam's M&A market?
According to Mr. Le Trong Minh, a calm lake surface doesn't mean there are no waves. And only when one sees the results can they realize the existence and feel the true power of these undercurrents. Recent M&A activities can be likened to these undercurrents.
For various reasons, many M&A deals have yet to reach a conclusion and become public. Nevertheless, the intensity of the negotiations and agreements is palpable, much like anticipating the presence of undercurrents.
This activity is expected to intensify even further in the near future, as the global market picture becomes clearer with stronger demand from both buyers and sellers. Meanwhile, domestic M&A activity is also strongly boosted by a series of macroeconomic policy moves as well as the impetus from the businesses themselves.

Despite the many variables in the global geopolitical landscape, "If there's one certainty in the uncertainties, it's that M&A activity will rebound, perhaps faster in some sectors and slower in others," as a senior expert at PwC put it.
“A bustling market is a completely achievable image for the Vietnamese M&A market. It’s just a matter of timing,” said Mr. Le Trong Minh, adding that through the discussions and analyses of experts at the Forum, we hope to understand the impact of major developments in the domestic and international macroeconomic landscape, major global trends, and international capital flows on the vibrancy of the Vietnamese M&A market in the near future.
At the same time, the practical stories shared by those directly involved at this Forum may help interested businesses decipher the needs and strategies for success in M&A transactions.
That was also the main topic of discussion in the two sessions of the Vietnam M&A Forum 2024.
