According to a report published in April 2026 by the South Korean Ministry of Education , the trend of increasing tuition fees is occurring in most schools, especially private universities in Seoul.
Eulji University currently has the highest tuition fees in the country at 11.28 million won per year, a 2.8% increase from the previous year. The high fees are mainly due to the expensive training costs in the Natural Sciences and Medicine programs.
Public universities continue to maintain significantly lower tuition fees. Seoul National University leads this group with 6.09 million won per year, while many other national universities range from 4.4 to 4.5 million won.
According to statistics, 130 out of 192 four-year universities increased tuition fees in 2026, accounting for nearly 68%. On average, Korean students now pay 7.27 million won in tuition fees per year, a 2.1% increase from the previous year. At private universities, the average is as high as 8.23 million won, almost double that of public universities.
Medical fields continue to have the highest tuition fees, averaging 10.33 million won per year. Meanwhile, engineering is at 7.68 million won, and social sciences and humanities are around 6.43 million won.
The South Korean Ministry of Education announced that it will maintain its policy of freezing tuition fees at most public schools to alleviate financial pressure on students.
Private school tuition in South Korea began to rise in 2023 when the government passed a regulation lifting the 14-year tuition fee freeze.
