VnExpressVnExpress14/04/2024

For the upcoming academic year, Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy plans to increase tuition fees by up to 10%, with Medical and Dentistry programs costing nearly 85 million VND per year.

This information was provided by Associate Professor Nguyen Ngoc Khoi, Head of the Training Department, at the Admissions Counseling Day organized by the Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy on the morning of April 14th. The event attracted approximately 1,600 students from Ho Chi Minh City and southern provinces.

Associate Professor Khoi stated that tuition fees for various majors range from 46 to 84.7 million VND per year (10 months), a 10% increase compared to the current rates. The two majors, Medicine and Dentistry, have tuition fees exceeding 80 million VND per year, an increase of over 7 million VND.

The lowest salaries are for Medical Engineering, Public Health , Nutrition, Dental Prosthetics, and Nursing, all at 46 million VND per year, an increase of 4.2 million VND.

The tuition fees for the 2024-2025 academic year at Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy are expected to be as follows (million VND/year):

TT Industry, industry group Current tuition fees Estimated tuition fees for the 2024-2025 academic year.
1 Medical 74.8 82.2
2 Dentistry 77 84.7
3 Pharmacy 55 60.5
4 Traditional medicine 45 50
5 Preventive medicine 45 50
6 Public health 41.8 46
7 Medical Engineering fields 41.8 46
8 Nutrition 41.8 46
9 Dental prosthetics 41.8 46
10 Nursing 41.8 46

For students from disadvantaged backgrounds, Mr. Khoi advised them to confidently apply to the school if they truly love it and have the ability. Each year, the school allocates 5.5 billion VND for scholarships, each covering approximately 25-100% of tuition fees. In addition, students can receive scholarships from various organizations and businesses, totaling around 4 billion VND.

"Many people worry that economic difficulties will prevent them from having the opportunity to attend the school, but in reality, the school's scholarship fund for students last year still has surplus funds that haven't been fully disbursed. Therefore, candidates should confidently apply," Mr. Khoi said.

This year, Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy is recruiting 2,516 students through five methods: direct admission, consideration of high school graduation exam scores, consideration of a combination of high school graduation exam scores and IELTS certificates; consideration of SAT scores (a standardized test used for university admissions in the US); and consideration of preparatory students.

Admission quotas and subject combinations for the University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Ho Chi Minh City in 2024.

The SAT score-based admissions method is exclusively for Medicine and Dentistry programs, accounting for a maximum of 5% of the enrollment quota in each program. Applicants must have an SAT score of 1,340/1,600 or higher in the two years preceding the application deadline. Applicants must register in person with the school and provide their College Board account information (the organization that administers the SAT test) so the school can verify their results.

In addition, candidates must have a total score in the 2024 high school graduation exam (based on their chosen subject combination) that is at or above the minimum passing score.

In the event that multiple candidates have the same score, the one who listed their preference higher will be given priority. If they are still tied in the order of preference, the school will then consider their total high school graduation exam score based on the chosen subject combination.

"Candidates can take the SAT multiple times and choose the highest score from their attempt, but they cannot combine scores from different sections, such as combining a Math score from one attempt with a Reading-Writing score from another," Mr. Khoi noted.

Some candidates expressed concern about reduced chances due to not having enough time to take the SAT exam. Mr. Khoi explained that the school allocates 5% of its enrollment quota in two majors for admission based on SAT scores, but this is also an increase of 5% compared to last year. Therefore, candidates applying through other methods will not be affected.

Regarding the combined admissions method using IELTS certificates and high school graduation exam scores, Mr. Khoi stated that the IELTS certificate is a necessary condition. Candidates with an IELTS certificate of 5.0 or 6.0 are eligible to apply, and the university will consider high school graduation exam scores from highest to lowest. Therefore, even with an IELTS certificate of 7.0 or 8.0, candidates will not receive priority or additional points.

The IELTS certificate requirements for each field of study are as follows:

IELTS 5.0 IELTS 6.0
Nursing Medical
Nutrition Dentistry
Dental prosthetics techniques Pharmacy
Public health Preventive medicine
Medical imaging techniques Traditional medicine
Rehabilitation techniques
Midwifery

The deadline for submitting applications will be announced by the school after the Ministry of Education and Training finalizes the university and college admissions plan for this year.

Last year, the admission scores based on high school graduation exam results for Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy ranged from 19 to 27.34, with the highest score being for the Medical program.
