On the evening of February 22nd, the final round of the "THedu English Rising Stars Contest" English debate competition took place, revolving around many hot topics for students today: the benefits and harms of using social media; and the ban on extra tutoring for primary school students.
The four outstanding contestants, selected from over 100 other participants, were divided into pairs to debate the two aforementioned hot topics.
The debate performance by students Hoang Ngoc Dong Phuong and Dang Minh Hoa (both 5th graders) surprised the judges.
The debate revolved around the issue of "Circular 29 of the Ministry of Education and Training regulating supplementary teaching and learning, which does not allow the organization of supplementary teaching for primary school students (except in some special cases)". While Dong Phuong argued that primary school students would find it difficult to study independently after school hours, Dang Minh Hoa completely disagreed.
Minh Hoa believes that extra classes are unnecessary because they create economic pressure and waste parents' time on transportation.
"Why should we pay for extra tutoring when the internet can help us learn on our own? Nowadays, there are many tools that students can use to learn math, Vietnamese, English, etc., for free."
"I think teachers also need to change their teaching methods, finding ways to convey all the knowledge to students right in the classroom so that they don't have to worry about going to extra classes," Minh Hoa said.

Sharing her thoughts on extra tutoring, Minh Hoa said that even though she's in 5th grade, she's used various learning methods to improve her skills so she doesn't need to attend extra classes.
Dong Phuong said that although she doesn't attend classes in person at centers, she still improves her math and Vietnamese skills through online courses. As for English, she takes extra classes to improve her necessary skills...
Commenting on the students' English debate on the hot topic of "Circular 29 regulating supplementary tutoring," Master of English Ngo Duy Phuc - lecturer at Ho Chi Minh City Open University - and one of the judges of the competition - said that he was very surprised by the students' abilities.
"Today's students are very sensitive to social issues and are well-trained in skills, including English skills, as well as expressing insightful opinions at a young age. This is something that makes me extremely happy," Mr. Phuc emphasized.
In the final results, first prize went to Dang Minh Hoa and second prize to Nguyen Nguyen Khang. The two third prizes were awarded to Pham Tran Y Nhi and Hoang Ngoc Dong Phuong.
