On the morning of September 11th, Nguyen Huynh Bao Nhi and Tu Dang Nguyen, students from Kien Thiet Secondary School (District 3), arrived early at the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Ho Chi Minh City. Holding two piggy banks in their hands, the two students said these were small gifts for students facing difficulties in the North.
Two students from Kien Thiet Secondary School brought their piggy banks to the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Ho Chi Minh City on the morning of September 11th.
In recent days, seeing images of schools devastated by floods, with everything swept away, Bao Nhi felt both fortunate that Ho Chi Minh City was not heavily affected by the natural disaster, and heartbroken for her peers and fellow countrymen in the North.
"I'm lucky that I can still go to school safely right now, while my classmates are in great danger. Not only have their books been swept away, but their lives are also at risk. Many people have gone missing…" – Bao Nhi shared.
From the daily allowance her parents give her, Nhi uses half for personal expenses and saves the other half in her piggy bank.
"I started saving money in my piggy bank last summer. My initial plan was to donate it to those in need. Today, when I broke open the piggy bank, even though I only managed to raise 520,000 VND, I hope it can help a little bit to our compatriots in the flood-stricken areas," Nhi said.
Representatives of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Ho Chi Minh City expressed their gratitude for the meaningful actions of the two children.
The amount of money Bảo Nhi and Đăng Nguyên saved up over a year.
Counting the money in his piggy bank, Dang Nguyen said this wasn't the first time he'd donated in a piggy bank. He had previously done many charitable acts.
"Once, I used all the money in my piggy bank to give to my mother to buy ingredients to cook vegetarian meals for people in difficult circumstances. Although the amount wasn't much, I felt very happy because I was doing something good for society," Nguyên said.
Ms. Do Khanh Duyen, Head of the Youth Union at Kien Thiet Secondary School, said she was delighted to see the meaningful actions of the two students. As soon as they heard about the campaign to support people in the North, the two students proactively contacted their homeroom teacher to ask for donations in their piggy banks, and the school arranged for a teacher to accompany them to the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Ho Chi Minh City to make the donation.
Earlier, on September 10th, the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Ho Chi Minh City also received many donations from students who brought piggy banks and notebooks to support people in the North.
According to the Department of Dyke Management and Disaster Prevention ( Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development ), due to the impact of Typhoon No. 3 and the subsequent floods, as of 9:00 AM on September 11th, 201 people have died or gone missing in affected localities (143 deaths and 58 missing).
