In the 18 years the ranking has been published, 2024 marks the first time that Hoi An Ancient Town has topped the list of the world's cheapest long-distance destinations for British tourists, surpassing Bali (Indonesia), Penang (Malaysia), and Phuket (Thailand).
The Post Office's Holiday Money Global Report is an annual event published for the past 18 years, ranking 40 global travel destinations in order from cheapest to most expensive.
The Post Office's ranking of destinations is based on the average prices of eight popular tourist items in 40 tourist cities worldwide.
These essentials include a cup of coffee, a glass of beer, a can of Coca-Cola, a bottle of water, a tube of sunscreen, a bottle of insect repellent, a three-course dinner for two, and a bottle of wine.
According to the report, the average spending per tourist in Hoi An when purchasing these eight items is estimated at around $64.
A liter of beer in Hoi An costs only $1.50, a can of Coca-Cola is about $1, a tube of sunscreen costs $4, and a three-course dinner for two costs $50.
Second place went to Cape Town (South Africa). The South African capital was knocked off the top spot in 2023 due to a 5% increase in prices, bringing the average cost of shopping up to $68.
Third place goes to Mombasa City (Kenya) with an average cost of $69 to purchase the listed items.
Tokyo (Japan) rose four places compared to 2023 and is now in fourth position, after costs dropped sharply by 16.2% to $74.
The Algarve (Portugal) is the only European destination to make the top 5, with an average cost of $75 for shopping.
At the bottom of the ranking, the city dubbed the world's most expensive destination is the town of Tamarindo (Costa Rica), with an average price of around $170, followed by New York City (USA).
