Indonesia eliminated from AFF Cup 2024, coach Shin Tae-yong not fired.

Coach Shin Tae-yong is facing immense pressure from the Indonesian public after the Indonesian national team failed to advance beyond the group stage of the 2024 AFF Cup. Calls for his dismissal have been circulating on social media. However, Shin is unlikely to lose his job because of this failure.

"Shin Tae-yong's position remains unchanged. Evaluation and improvement are necessary, but parting ways is not yet an option. Doing so immediately after the AFF Cup defeat would not be wise," CNN Indonesia quoted Sumardji, head of the home team's delegation, as saying.

Coach Shin Tae-yong has not lost his job after the failure at the 2024 AFF Cup.

Despite using a youth team and not setting specific goals, being eliminated early from the regional tournament was still unacceptable to Indonesian football fans. Even the president of the Indonesian Football Federation (PSSI), Erick Thohir, believed that the team should have reached the semi-finals.

Mr. Thohir also emphasized that PSSI will reassess the work of coach Shin Tae-yong and his staff after the 2024 AFF Cup. This has led to rumors that the South Korean coach's position is further in jeopardized. However, team manager Sumardji affirmed that there are no disagreements between the two sides.

"Criticism is acceptable, but we shouldn't put Erick Thohir in a position of antagonism with coach Shin Tae-yong. Don't create conflict because that's not good. We shouldn't let the atmosphere in the federation deteriorate. The Indonesian national team still has a long way to go in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers," a senior Indonesian national team official told the media.

At the 2024 AFF Cup, the Indonesian national team only managed one victory with a squad primarily composed of U22 players. Coach Shin Tae-yong repeatedly complained about the match schedule and squad issues – even though all decisions were made by the Indonesian Football Federation.

PSSI Chairman Erick Thohir reminded the South Korean coach to focus on his duties. He also rejected Coach Shin Tae-yong's request to influence his club to call up key players Ivar Jenner and Justin Hubner for the 2024 AFF Cup.
