To expedite the construction of the new capital city of Nusantara on Borneo Island, the Indonesian Parliament has just approved an additional 15 trillion rupiah (US$1.01 billion).
President Joko Widodo pledged that the government would only invest 20% of the estimated $32 billion cost of the new capital city construction project, with the remainder coming from the private sector.
Indonesia began construction of its new capital city, located 2,000km northeast of Jakarta, in mid-2022 with the aim of creating a green city of the future, emphasizing forests, parks, food production using renewable energy, smart waste management, and green buildings.
Indonesia is currently accelerating the construction of key administrative buildings in the capital, including the presidential palace and buildings for major ministries, with the goal of having at least 16,000 civil servants, military personnel, and police officers relocate there next year.
