1. How to enable Standby Mode
StandBy can be thought of as a kind of smart display for the iPhone, providing quick access to different screens and remote viewing at a glance, such as when your device is charging on the stove, desk, or nightstand.
If you charge your iPhone at night, Standby will adapt to the low light and take on a reddish hue. Standby is available on all iPhone models that support iOS 17, but the ability to use Standby's always-on feature is only available on the iPhone 14 Pro Max models.
To activate Standby, your iPhone needs to be locked, lying flat, or charging on a wireless charger (MagSafe or Qi or Lightning charger), not lying flat on a surface.
Standby mode is enabled by default, but you can manually enable or disable it by going to Settings -> Standby mode and toggling the Standby mode switch.
2. Customize different waiting screens
Standby consists of three screens that can be accessed by swiping horizontally across your iPhone's screen. The first screen shows interactive widgets, the second screen shows individual photos from your Photos library, and the third screen is a large clock.
The widget screen consists of two widget stacks displayed side by side that you can swipe up and down independently. The stacks look like expanded versions of the Home screen widget stacks and even include similar options like Smart Rotate and Widget Suggestions.
To customize your widget stack, press and hold on it. Face ID will then unlock your iPhone and the stack will continue to appear on the screen in jiggle mode. You can add widgets to the stack using the + button in the top left, and toggle Widget Suggestions and Smart Rotation on/off using the buttons on the right.
StandBy's photo screen can also be customized by tapping on the location or date of the photo to activate Face ID, then when unlocked you'll be taken to the photo in your Photo Library.
The third StandBy screen shows the time and date in a variety of themes that you can swipe through vertically. Some themes also show additional information like the temperature or an alarm. If you press and hold the clock, you can switch between different themes, including: Digital, Analog, World , Sun, and Floating.
3. Notifications, Live Activities, and Siri
Incoming notifications will be displayed full screen when you leave your iPhone in Sleep mode. So if you get an iMessage, for example, it will pop up with the sender's name and a Message icon to let you know you have a message.
Live Activities, in addition to being presented in full-screen mode, content that isn't normally displayed in notifications won't appear in Standby mode unless you're nearby and have unlocked your device with Touch ID or Face ID.
