1. How to activate Standby Mode

StandBy can be considered a type of smart display for the iPhone, offering quick access to different screens and the ability to view them remotely, such as when your device is charging on the stovetop, desk, or bedside table.

If you charge your iPhone overnight, Standby mode will adapt to low light and have a reddish tint. Standby mode is available on all iPhone models that support iOS 17, but the ability to use the always-on feature of Standby mode is only available on iPhone 14 Pro Max models.

To activate Standby Mode, your iPhone needs to be locked, lying flat, or charging on a wireless charger (MagSafe or Qi or Lightning charger), not lying flat on a surface.

To customize the widget stack, press and hold the stack. Face ID will then unlock your iPhone, and the stack will continue to appear on the screen in shake mode. You can add widgets to the stack using the + button in the top left, and toggle Widget Suggestions and Smart Rotation on/off using the buttons on the right.

StandBy's photo screen can also be customized by tapping on the location or date of the photo to activate Face ID, then when you unlock, you'll be taken to the photo in your Photo Library.

StandBy's third screen displays the date and time in various themes that you can swipe through vertically. Some themes also display additional information such as temperature or alarms. Incoming notifications will be displayed full-screen when your iPhone is in Standby mode. So, if you receive an iMessage, for example, it will pop up with the sender's name and a Messages icon to let you know you have a message.

Live Activities, in addition to being presented in full-screen mode, will not display content that is typically not shown in notifications unless you are nearby and have unlocked your device using Touch ID or Face ID.
