According to market research firm Counterpoint Research , the iPhone 16 was the world's best-selling smartphone in the first quarter.

Compared to the same period last year, the top four positions remain unchanged, all occupied by iPhones. In total, five Apple devices are in the top 10 best-selling smartphones in the first quarter. For comparison, Samsung has four devices, and Xiaomi has one.

The market share of the top 10 smartphones remained stable. However, devices in the budget segment occupied 4 positions, a slight increase compared to the same period last year (3 devices).

The iPhone 16 has seen strong sales in Japan, the Middle East, and Africa. Japan recorded the highest sales growth. According to analysts, improved economic conditions and revised subsidy regulations are factors driving users to upgrade their iPhones in the country.

The next two positions in the top 10 belong to the iPhone 16 Pro Max and iPhone 16 Pro, respectively. The iPhone Pro line faced obstacles in China due to its price exceeding government subsidies, not to mention competitive pressure from brands like Huawei. Nevertheless, the Pro line still accounted for nearly 50% of total iPhone sales in the first quarter.

The iPhone 15 ranks 4th on the list, while the iPhone 16 Plus comes in 10th. The iPhone 16e had an impressive debut, ranking 6th out of 10 best-selling smartphones in March. Although more expensive than the iPhone SE 2022, it is expected to sell better than its predecessor thanks to significantly improved hardware and features.

Samsung's Galaxy S25 Ultra ranked 7th, down two places from the same period last year compared to the S24 Ultra. According to Counterpoint Research , the main reason is that the S25 Ultra was launched later than last year. However, the S25 series still generated stable revenue, contributing approximately 25% of Samsung's total sales in March.

With its deep integration of Google's Gemini AI platform, the S25 series marks Samsung's shift towards a smarter, more personalized AI experience for users.

The Galaxy A16 5G ranked 5th, moving up one position compared to its predecessor at the same time last year. Sales of this model increased by 17% thanks to wider distribution in regions such as North America. This is also the largest market for the A16 5G, accounting for one-third of total global sales.

The Galaxy A06 ranks 6th in the top 10, a jump of 4 places compared to the Galaxy A05 in Q1 2024. According to Counterpoint Research , this growth stems from increased demand for affordable smartphones in many regions.

Overall, budget smartphones were the fastest-growing segment in the first quarter, accounting for nearly 20% of total global smartphone sales.

The Redmi 14C 4G is Xiaomi's only representative in the top 10 smartphones of the first quarter. Compared to its predecessor, sales increased by 43% year-on-year, mostly from emerging markets such as the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America.

According to analysts, the market share of the top 10 best-selling smartphones is expected to remain stable in the future, despite tariff tensions and market instability. The high-end segment is expected to contribute significantly as manufacturers increasingly focus on and launch more expensive smartphones to serve consumers.
