According to market research firm Counterpoint Research , the iPhone 16 was the world's best-selling smartphone in the first quarter.
Compared to the same period last year, the top 4 positions remained unchanged, all belonging to iPhone. In total, 5 Apple devices were in the top 10 best-selling smartphones in the first quarter. For comparison, Samsung had 4 devices, while Xiaomi had one.
The market share of the top 10 smartphones remained stable. However, the number of devices in the low-cost segment occupied 4 positions, a slight increase compared to the same period last year (3 devices).
iPhone 16 has high sales in Japan, the Middle East and Africa. Japan recorded the highest sales growth. According to analysts, improved economic conditions and revised subsidy regulations are factors that encourage users to upgrade iPhones in this country.
The next two positions in the top 10 belong to the iPhone 16 Pro Max and iPhone 16 Pro, respectively. The iPhone Pro line has encountered obstacles in China due to selling prices exceeding the government subsidy level, not to mention competitive pressure from brands like Huawei. However, the Pro line still accounted for nearly 50% of total iPhone sales in the first quarter.
The iPhone 15 ranked 4th on the list, while the iPhone 16 Plus ranked 10th. With the iPhone 16e, the device had an impressive debut when it ranked 6th out of 10 best-selling smartphones in March. Although more expensive than the iPhone SE 2022, the product is expected to sell better than its predecessor thanks to significantly improved hardware and features.
Samsung's Galaxy S25 Ultra ranked 7th, down 2 places from the same period last year with the S24 Ultra. According to Counterpoint Research , the main reason was that the S25 Ultra was released later than last year. However, the S25 series still brought in stable revenue, contributing about 25% of Samsung's total sales in March.
With deep integration of Google's Gemini AI platform, the S25 series marks Samsung's shift to a smarter AI experience, increasing personalization for users.
The Galaxy A16 5G ranked 5th, up one spot from its predecessor in the same period last year. Sales of this model increased by 17% thanks to wide distribution in regions such as North America. This is also the largest market for the A16 5G, accounting for 1/3 of total global sales.

The 6th position in the top 10 belongs to Galaxy A06, up 4 places compared to Galaxy A05 in Q1/2024. According to Counterpoint Research , the growth comes from increased demand for low-cost smartphones in many regions.
Overall, low-cost smartphones were the fastest growing segment in the first quarter, accounting for nearly 20% of total global smartphone sales.
Redmi 14C 4G is Xiaomi's only representative in the top 10 smartphones in the first quarter. Compared to its predecessor, product sales increased by 43% over the same period last year, mostly from emerging markets such as the Middle East, Africa and Latin America.
According to analysts, the market share of the top 10 best-selling smartphones is expected to remain stable in the future, despite tariff tensions and market instability. The high-end segment is expected to contribute significantly as manufacturers increasingly focus on launching expensive smartphones to serve users.
