In a social media post on April 24th, analyst Dan Nystedt stated that the standard iPhone 18 will have 12GB of RAM, the same amount Apple equipped the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max with last September.
Nystedt also reiterated a previously mentioned rumor that Apple secured the first batch of 2nm chips from TSMC for the A20 chip, giving it superior performance in the iPhone 18 series.
TSMC's 2nm process delivers 15% better computing performance than 3nm without sacrificing energy efficiency. The iPhone 17 series uses TSMC's 3nm N3P process.
The upgrade to 12GB of RAM on the base model may be related to Apple Intelligence. Apple is likely to introduce expanded AI features with iOS 27 at the WWDC 2026 event, which takes place on June 8th.
AI tasks on the device consume a lot of memory. Therefore, keeping lower-end iPhones capable of running full Apple Intelligence is the motivation behind Apple upgrading the memory of the standard version to match last year's Pro models.
Specifically, the iPhone 18 may not launch at the same time as the iPhone 18 Pro this fall.
According to sources, Apple will delay the introduction of the standard version until early 2027, along with the iPhone 18e and the second-generation iPhone Air. Meanwhile, the Pro series and the long-awaited foldable iPhone will appear in September as is traditional.
