JSOL undergoes a transformation.

Following his hit song "Anh trai 'say hi'," JSOL has fully utilized his youthful, humorous, and entertaining style in the single "Dán mắt" to deliver something enjoyable.

JSOL is one of the veteran artists in the first season of "Brother Says Hi," having officially debuted in 2017. However, despite years of artistic activity and experimenting with various genres, the singer has yet to have a major hit of his own.

Many viewers felt sorry for JSOL, as he was one of the few artists who possessed all the necessary qualities of an idol: a bright appearance, solid singing technique, and the ability to perform live and stage well. Even when participating in "Brother Says Hi ," although he reached the final night and consistently performed well, the number of votes for the male singer was not high, and he was seen as being too attached to HIEUTHUHAI to ensure his safety in each round of the competition.

In return, JSOL has built a fresh new image. Previously, his management company aimed for a "schoolboy heartthrob" image with a gentle, scholarly appearance and warm, easy-to-listen-to ballads with a touch of sentimentality. However, upon joining the show, he made his mark with pink hair, a lively and energetic personality, and a willingness to make himself look silly to create humor. Although JSOL's core fanbase after "Anh trai say Hi " didn't grow as dramatically as Duong Domic or Quang Hung MasterD, he's clearly become much more memorable than before.

With his recently released single "Dán mắt" (Eye-catching), JSOL fully explores a new stylistic direction, breaking away from his previous bland, scholarly image.

Fast-paced, trend-following music

In "Dán Mắt" (Eye- catching), JSOL collaborated with experienced Vpop producer Khắc Hưng. This producer demonstrated his keen market insight after more than 10 years in the industry, having added another hit song to his repertoire this past year: "Cay," a collaboration with Jimmii Nguyễn. In fact, Khắc Hưng is already familiar with JSOL, having worked with him on the single "Độc Thân" ( Single) – a previous, not-so-successful attempt at dance-pop.

In "Dán Mắt" (Eye-Dye) , Khắc Hưng incorporated top-trending elements, clearly demonstrating his desire to make the song a hit. Most notably, this includes the use of Y2K sounds, specifically funk, throughout the song; the constantly shifting structure between vocals and spoken word, plus a rap segment in the second verse; and the design of a post-chorus with the repeated lyrics "Kidnap your heart and take it home as your own," creating multiple points of attention instead of focusing solely on the chorus. Particularly noteworthy is the half-rap, half-spoken section at the end, reminiscent of R&B and hip-hop tracks from the US and UK in the 2000s.

By collaborating with Khac Hung, JSOL can ensure its products are always the most fashionable.

In terms of trend-following ability, Khắc Hưng remains sharp. This year alone, he released a song in the 90s-influenced bolero style, " Cay ," but shortly after, he and Min released the single "(Từng là) Boyfriend, Girlfriend," a fresh, contemporary synth-pop track. While contrasting, these two songs demonstrate a timely adoption of current trends by international artists, led by Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande.

When collaborating with JSOL, to fully explore the singer's fresh personality, he chose y2k as the backbone for the single " Dán Mắt" ( Eye-Covering). The lyrics also contain slang terms that are currently trending among young people, such as "I'm drunk on you like I'm drunk on catnip/ What are your threads so I can follow you/ Remind me so I can send you candy." Combined with his signature pink hair, the image JSOL built in this song is far more impressive than his previous singles.

Is it a long-term pursuit?

JSOL is an artist with all the skills of an idol. When he switches from singing ballads to a dance-pop track, his skills are clearly showcased: a strong, versatile vocal range that transitions smoothly from singing to rapping, and decent dancing and performance abilities. JSOL's previous weakness—his bland, forgettable style—has now been improved with a fresh and exciting new image.

One advantage JSOL has over other singers of his time is his ability to sing clearly. In pop in general, or dance pop in particular, clear pronunciation has long ceased to be the most important factor, as artists often choose to sing smoothly and change their vocal style to create their own unique mark. JSOL is one of the few singers who still pursues a solid vocal technique thanks to his training at the Military University of Culture and Arts. In the single "Dán mắt" (Eye -catching), there are sections with fairly fast-paced rap, and JSOL constantly changes his style from cute to slightly "bad boy," but there is never a moment that makes the lyrics seem obscured.

JSOL's new image is clearly much more impressive than before.

However, "Dán mắt" still contains a weakness that could be considered "inherent" in Khắc Hưng's music from the beginning: sometimes the verses are rather meaningless. For a song aiming for a youthful, adorable feel, focusing on catchy, trendy music, lyrics aren't the most important element. However, when JSOL raps the line "I call you fish pate/ Mackerel, salmon, tuna," many discerning listeners might frown or shudder. If they want to pursue this style long-term, Khắc Hưng and JSOL need to work more closely to tone down unnecessary phrases.

In his first solo single since leaving the show "Brother Says Hi ," JSOL successfully introduced his new style, both visually and musically. There are still areas for improvement, but for now, JSOL has made a stronger impression on the audience, and that is a necessary foundation for him to make further progress in his career.
