JSOL is one of the veteran artists in the first season of Anh trai say Hi when the male singer officially debuted in 2017. However, after many years of working in the arts, trying out many different genres, the male singer still has not had a big hit of his own.
Many audiences feel sorry for JSOL because he is one of the few artists who possess the necessary elements of an idol: bright appearance, good singing technique, and the ability to live and perform well. Even when participating in Anh trai say Hi , although he made it to the final night and always performed consistently, the number of votes for the male singer was not high, and he was considered too attached to HIEUTHUHAI to be safe through each round.
In return, JSOL has built a new image. If before, he was directed by his management company to the style of "School Male God" with a gentle, scholarly appearance, warm and easy-to-listen ballads with a bit of depth, then when entering the program, he made an impression with pink hair, a lively and lively personality, not afraid to ruin his image to make people laugh. Although the number of "hardcore" fans of JSOL after Anh trai say Hi did not grow as strongly as Duong Domic or Quang Hung MasterD, it is clear that he still became more memorable than the previous period.
With the newly released single "Dan Mat" , JSOL thoroughly exploited a new style direction, breaking away from the previous bland scholarly image.
Fast-paced music
In "Dan Mat" , JSOL collaborated with experienced Vpop producer Khac Hung. This producer showed that his vision in the market is still very sharp after more than 10 years of working in the profession when in the first half of this year, he scored another hit for himself, the song "Cay" in collaboration with Jimmii Nguyen. In fact, Khac Hung is also a producer who is familiar with JSOL when he worked with the male singer on the single "Doc Than" - the male singer's previous unsuccessful attempt at dance pop.
Coming to "Dan Mat" , Khac Hung put into the song the top trendy elements of the moment, clearly showing his desire to turn the song into a hit. The most obvious is the use of y2k sounds, specifically the funk genre, throughout the song; or the song structure that constantly changes between singing and reading, plus a rap in the second verse of the song, designing a post-chorus with the repetitive lyrics "Bắt đi tim em đi về làm cái riêng" to create many different points of attention instead of focusing on the chorus. In particular, at the end of the song, Khac Hung created a half-rap, half-reading part that is very similar to R&B - hiphop products in the US-UK in the 2000s.

Cooperating with Khac Hung, JSOL can ensure that its products are always the most fashionable. |
In terms of the ability to catch trends, Khac Hung is still sharp. Just this year, he had a song pursuing the bolero style influenced by the 90s called Cay , but right after that, he and Min released the single (Used to be) Boyfriend, Girlfriend performed in a fresh contemporary synth pop style. The two songs, although contrasting, both show very timely learning of the prevailing trends in international artists, with the lead of Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande.
When collaborating with JSOL, to fully exploit the new personality aspects of the male singer, he chose y2k as the backbone to develop the single "Dan Mat" . The lyrics of the song also contain terms that are "making waves" among young people such as "Say em nhu la say co meo/ Threads em la gi de anh theo/ Remind me so i can send candy" . Combined with the "brand" pink head, the image that JSOL built in the song is much more impressive than the previous singles in his career.
Can it be pursued long term?
JSOL is an artist with all the skills of an idol. When he stops singing ballads and puts himself into a dance pop song, each of JSOL's skills is clearly shown: a solid voice, a variety of transitions from singing to rapping, rapping smoothly, and a pretty good dancing and performing ability. JSOL's biggest weakness before was his bland, easy-to-listen-to style, but now it has been improved with a new, interesting image.
One plus point of JSOL compared to other singers of the same period is the ability to sing clearly. In pop in general or dance pop in particular, the factor of clear lyrics has long been not so important because artists often choose to sing smoothly, break the voice to create their own mark. JSOL is one of the few singers who still pursues a school of solid singing technique thanks to being trained at the Military University of Culture and Arts. In the single "Dan mat ", there are quite fast-paced rap segments, JSOL also constantly changes the way of performing from cute to a bit "bad boy", but there is no moment that makes the lyrics blurred.

JSOL's new image is clearly more impressive than before. |
However, “Dan mat” still contains a weakness that can be considered “inherent” in Khac Hung’s music up to now, which is that sometimes there are verses that are somewhat meaningless. With a song that aims for youthfulness, cuteness, focusing on trendy catchy music, lyrics are not too important. However, when JSOL raps to the part “I call you fish pate/ Mackerel, salmon, tuna” , many picky audiences may frown and shudder. If they want to pursue this style for a long time, Khac Hung and JSOL need to work more closely to reduce unnecessary words.
In his first solo single since leaving the show Anh trai say Hi , JSOL has successfully introduced his new style, both in terms of image and music. There will still be elements that need to be improved, but for now, JSOL has left a stronger impression in the hearts of the audience, and that is the necessary premise for him to take further steps in his career.
