United have begun their overhaul with the £62.5m signing of Matheus Cunha from Wolves. On paper, this is an ideal addition.
In the 2024/25 Premier League season, the Brazilian scored 15 goals and provided 6 assists. Looking back at MU, no player has reached the 10-goal mark. The most are Bruno Fernandes and Amad Diallo with 8 goals each. Ruben Amorim needs a stable source of goals, while also reducing the scoring burden on captain Bruno, who has just rejected an attractive offer from the Saudi Pro League to continue with MU. Here, Cunha is a perfect choice.
Given his form at Wolves, Cunha is certainly comfortable in the 3-4-3 system that the Portuguese coach is deploying. He is best suited as a left-sided attacking midfielder, but would also be fine starting on the opposite flank or as a centre-forward.

Cunha has scored 15 goals and provided 6 assists in the 2024/25 Premier League. |
Cunha is the Premier League’s most direct attacker. He’s always charging forward, receiving the ball and making passes with his keen vision, or dribbling past defenders and scoring. Those who have played with Cunha say he’s intelligent, always knowing how to get the best out of the ball at his feet, and in unpredictable ways.
Of course, because Cunha is Brazilian. Former Wolves assistant manager Ian Burchnall says Cunha is one of the few who has retained his samba sense in an era of pragmatic football. “He can create magic every day,” Burchnall says.
Part of the reason is that Cunha plays by instinct. The 26-year-old doesn’t like to spend hours analysing opponents and talking about tactics. He needs to be free, to be put in his favourite position and be able to express himself.

As a Brazilian player, Cunha plays by instinct and hates being constrained. |
"Cunha is an entertainer," Burchnall said. "He has the ability to turn a game around in a moment, break the ice and get the crowd going." Cunha himself declared: "I don't want to go out and play like a robot. I want to enjoy football."
It sounds appealing, but Cunha is clearly not an easy player to use. After so many broken relationships with Paul Pogba, Cristiano Ronaldo, Jadon Sancho, Antony and Alejandro Garnacho, can United handle an emotional striker who hates being tied down like Cunha?
Furthermore, statistics from the 2024/25 Premier League show that Cunha spent 77.6% of his time on the pitch... walking, more than any other player in the league. In addition, coaches who have coached Cunha have complained about his lack of active defensive support. In addition, the player himself has admitted that he is "emotional", leading to many times losing control. Due to the controversy in the loss to Ipswich and in the FA Cup match against Bournemouth, Cunha was suspended twice last season.
Amorim expects a solution from Cunha, but does not rule out the possibility of receiving more problems on his side. However, in the current context, MU people will only look at the positive.
