Leeds (in white shirts) are gradually pulling away from Spurs in the relegation battle. |
Roberto De Zerbi's team currently sits in 18th place, two points behind safety with only four rounds remaining. This isn't a huge gap, but given the demanding schedule and inconsistent form, Tottenham's hopes of avoiding relegation are becoming increasingly slim.
Leeds were one of the direct rivals that Spurs hoped to overcome, especially when the two teams met on May 12th. However, the victory against Burnley helped Leeds extend their lead to 9 points over Tottenham, almost eliminating the possibility of being dragged back into the relegation battle.
At this point, a more realistic goal for Tottenham is to catch up with West Ham and Nottingham Forest, who are 2 and 5 points ahead of them respectively. However, the road ahead for Spurs is far from easy as they face what is considered a tough fixture list.
Tottenham will travel to Aston Villa, then return home to host Leeds, who are currently on an impressive six-match unbeaten run. In the final two rounds, Spurs will play away against Chelsea, before concluding the season with a match against Everton.
Speaking ahead of the away match against Villa on the morning of May 4th, coach De Zerbi emphasized that his players must "fight to the death on the pitch" if they want to avoid the unthinkable scenario of relegation.
Given the current situation, the biggest question remains whether fighting spirit is enough to save Tottenham from one of the biggest shocks in Premier League history?
