The WHO is urging countries to strengthen monitoring and adherence to health recommendations.
Speaking on May 12, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that there are currently no signs of a widespread outbreak, but the situation could change, with the risk of more new cases appearing in the coming weeks, due to the relatively long incubation period of the Hanta virus, ranging from 1 to 8 weeks after exposure.
On the same day, WHO Regional Representative for Africa Marie-Roseline Belizaire also emphasized the need for heightened vigilance against a potential Hanta virus outbreak, stating that preparing for a potential epidemic does not mean panicking, but rather ensuring that surveillance systems, technical teams, and response mechanisms are always ready.
