On the evening of May 23rd, the Da Nang City Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, in coordination with the Vietnam Wrestling Federation and other relevant units, organized the opening ceremony of the 2026 Asian Age Group Wrestling Championships.
The 2026 Asian Age Group Wrestling Championships will take place from May 23rd to June 9th at Tien Son Sports Arena and My Khe Beach Park ( Da Nang ).
The tournament brings together 25 countries and territories with nearly 900 athletes competing in four categories: freestyle wrestling, Greco-Roman wrestling, women's wrestling, and U17 beach wrestling. The Vietnamese wrestling team registered to participate in the weight categories for U23 and U17 men's and women's age groups and aims to achieve the best possible results.
According to the organizers, the U23 men's Greco-Roman wrestling competition will be held in weight classes from 55kg to 130kg. The men's freestyle wrestling competition will be in weight classes from 57kg to 125kg. The women's freestyle wrestling competition will be in weight classes from 50kg to 76kg. For the U17 category, the men's Greco-Roman wrestling weight class will be from 45kg to 80kg, the men's freestyle wrestling weight class from 45kg to 80kg, and the women's freestyle wrestling weight class from 40kg to 73kg.
The 2026 Asian Age Group Wrestling Championships marks a new milestone for Vietnamese wrestling, as just one year after wrestler Pham Huynh Minh Hieu's historic gold medal win in Vung Tau in 2025, Vietnam will once again host the Asian Beach Wrestling Championships U17.
The highlight of the tournament is the 18-day series of events featuring a range of continental competitions organized by the World Wrestling Federation (UWW), including U23, U17, beach wrestling, grappling, pankration, and amateur MMA. This is considered the most intensive UWW event period ever held in Asia.
At the opening ceremony, Deputy Director of the Da Nang City Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Tao Viet Hai, stated that Da Nang's consecutive hosting of continental and world-level wrestling tournaments not only affirms Vietnam's and the city's capacity to organize international sporting events but also demonstrates the strong development of high-performance sports and the locality's orientation towards international integration.
Two weeks ago, Da Nang successfully hosted the 2026 World Beach Wrestling Championships, leaving a positive impression on international friends regarding its organization, hospitality, and professional sporting environment. This success further motivates the city to host the Asian Age Group Wrestling Championships this year.
