Exploiting the potential of MICE tourism

With its central location in the Central Highlands, tourism combined with conferences, seminars, exhibitions, and events (MICE tourism) is identified by Dak Lak tourism industry as an advantage for development, contributing to diversifying the province's tourism types.

Dak Lak has many potentials and advantages to develop MICE tourism.

According to the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism (DOCST), up to now, the whole province has about 256 tourist accommodation establishments, an increase of nearly 19% compared to the beginning of 2021. Specifically, there are 34 hotels recognized from 1 to 5 stars, 68 unrated hotels, 133 motels, 7 guest houses, 10 homestays, 3 tourist apartments..., with 5,357 rooms, meeting the needs and serving MICE tourist groups.

In addition, the locality also has many destinations for sightseeing, camping, and learning about the unique culture of ethnic minorities, so it is very convenient for organizing events and tourism experiences for visitors.

In an effort to attract tourists, Dak Lak province is prioritizing investment and development of quality, diverse tourism products with different experiences to serve tourists, suitable to market demand and enhance competitiveness.

Ms. Nguyen Thuy Phuong Hieu, Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, said that developing MICE tourism is a type of tourism that Dak Lak tourism industry is interested in and encourages to develop. Because this type of tourism can take place at any time of the year, depending on the needs of customers.

The advantage of MICE tourism is its ability to generate large revenue thanks to the large number of guests, using many services at the same time with higher spending levels than regular groups of guests.

Indian tourists visit, experience and learn about the coffee processing process at Vuong Thanh Cong Production and Trading Company Limited (Buon Ma Thuot City).

Dak Lak has organized and welcomed many international delegations in large numbers to organize events, stay for a long time and combine experiential tourism activities. Many national and international conferences, seminars, and cultural, sports and tourism events have been successfully organized in the province. For example: The Business and Investment Conference between India and the Central Highlands provinces took place in mid-April 2024; The 2023 International Trade Connection Conference within the framework of the 8th Buon Ma Thuot Coffee Festival in 2023; The conference on tourism cooperation and development between Quang Binh, Quang Tri, Da Nang, Quang Nam Thua Thien - Hue and the Central Highlands provinces...

Ms. Pham Thi Truc Ngan, Head of Sales Department of Saigon Star Tourism Joint Stock Company, said that up to now, the company has organized many MICE groups with the number of 200 - 250 people/group to organize conferences combined with sightseeing and experiencing famous relics and landscapes in Dak Lak. Tourists are very satisfied with the quality of service and enjoy the natural landscapes in the places visited.

The workshop "Dak Lak real estate market in the new period: Challenges and opportunities" took place in Dak Lak province in April 2024.

In order to develop MICE tourism, the provincial tourism industry is actively researching the market, building and organizing tourism promotion programs with focus and key points associated with cultural events, festivals, conferences and seminars in the province.

However, for MICE to truly become a new development direction, Dak Lak needs to increase investment in developing tourism infrastructure, supporting services such as: entertainment, shopping, night entertainment to serve tourists; actively host conferences, exhibitions, fairs, national and international events...

In addition, MICE tourism requires higher quality human resources than other types of tourism, so improving the quality of local tourism human resources is a core factor that needs attention.
