Unleash your creativity.
While browsing social media, Ms. Nguyen Thi Be, a resident of Vinh Tuy commune, stumbled upon velvet wire flowers. Captivated by the soft, vibrant flowers created from stiff wire, she ordered the materials and tried making them herself. Despite watching many instructional videos , she initially faced considerable difficulties, and her finished products lacked the softness and natural look they deserved.

After several weeks of patiently familiarizing herself with the new material, her products became increasingly refined and received much praise. In over half a year of dedication, she has created many types of flowers in diverse styles and colors. Ms. Bé shared: “Making velour wire flowers isn't difficult, but it requires skill and meticulous attention to detail. The maker must be flexible, creative, and imaginative in bending the wire to create the desired shape. Once you get the hang of it, you can freely create many different flower designs.”
According to Ms. Bé, the materials for making velvet wire flowers are quite easy to buy. To ensure the product is durable and beautiful, it's necessary to choose wire with a thick layer of velvet and vibrant colors. Depending on the idea and level of intricacy, each product goes through many stages and takes varying amounts of time. Some products only take a few hours to make, while others can take several days to complete. For Ms. Bé, the greatest joy is when customers love the products she creates; that's also the motivation for her to continue with this craft.
In her living room, pots of apricot blossoms, peach blossoms, lotus flowers, and orchids in various colors are neatly arranged, waiting to be delivered to customers. She proudly showed off a large, newly completed pot of yellow apricot blossoms, with each oval petal soft and naturally curved; the delicate buds interspersed with vibrant yellow create a lifelike appearance. She also added a layer of moss to the base of the plant, so it took more than three days to complete. "To make a beautiful flower arrangement, I have to come up with ideas for shaping the plant and choosing a suitable pot. The flowers are made petal by petal, the pistils are formed, buds are created, leaves are made, and then they are assembled into a cluster and attached to the branches. The person doing the work needs to master the technique of flower arranging and adjusting the plant's shape to be harmonious and natural," Ms. Bé explained.
Earn extra income
As Tet (Lunar New Year) approaches, the demand for home decorations increases. Wire-made flowers such as apricot blossoms, peach blossoms, lotus flowers, orchids, rice stalks, and sunflowers are popular choices. Compared to some other types of handcrafted flowers, wire-made flowers have lower material costs but require more time and effort. Prices range from tens of thousands to several million dong, depending on size and intricacy. Single flowers cost from 15,000 to 30,000 dong; large, elaborate flower arrangements can cost from 150,000 to 900,000 dong, or even several million dong.
In the final months of the year, Ms. Bé is busy importing materials and shaping the trunks of apricot and peach blossom trees to complete orders on time. This year, she has received orders for more than 20 flower pots of various types according to customer requests. Besides making them according to samples, she also designs them to suit each person's individual preferences. Ms. Bé confided: "Because I have young children, I can't work far away, so I take advantage of my free time to make velour wire flowers to earn extra income. This year, there are many orders, so I only accept what I can to ensure delivery before Tet. Thanks to that, my family has extra income to shop and have a more prosperous Tet celebration."
Also involved in the craft, Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Ngan, residing in Thanh Loc commune, has been making velvet wire flowers for two Tet seasons. Initially, she made them to decorate her home, but seeing many people asking to buy them, she started taking orders to sell. She shared her products on her personal Facebook page, receiving attention from many customers. To diversify her designs, she constantly learns and explores new ways to make flowers, combining colors and shaping them to make them softer and more vibrant. In addition, she also imports velvet wire to sell to those who need it. “I take advantage of evenings and weekends to make velvet wire flowers to deliver to customers on time. This Tet, customers ordered many pots of apricot blossoms, peach blossoms, and rice stalks, so I stopped taking orders. Thanks to selling velvet wire flowers, I can earn an extra 4-7 million VND, which helps cover Tet shopping expenses,” Ms. Ngan shared.
Beyond their aesthetic value, velour wire flowers also offer a suitable livelihood for many women, especially during Tet (Lunar New Year). These handcrafted products, imbued with personal touches, are gradually establishing their place in the market, contributing to enriching the cultural and spiritual life of local people every spring.
