The most common trait among students entering this field is their love for interacting with children, and despite knowing the work is demanding, they are determined to stick with the profession.
From societal needs to thoughtful career choices.
According to Ms. Ha Thi Thu Quynh, Head of the Midwifery Department, the Midwifery Department of Dong Nai Medical College has consistently maintained a high enrollment rate over the past three years. In 2023 and 2024, the enrollment rate exceeded 92% of the target; and in 2025, this figure is expected to increase to 115%.

Explaining the reasons, Ms. Ha Thi Thu Quynh, M.A., stated: First, it stems from the increasing societal demand for specialized care services for mothers and babies. As people's living standards improve, healthcare, especially maternal and child healthcare, receives more attention and systematic investment. Meanwhile, the midwifery profession plays a unique role, not only supporting mothers and newborns during childbirth but also participating in women's healthcare at many important stages such as puberty, before, during, and after pregnancy, perimenopause, and menopause.
Furthermore, the demand for highly trained midwives is increasing, driven by the development of obstetrics and gynecology departments in public hospitals as well as private multi-specialty clinics. Beyond working in healthcare facilities, many midwifery graduates are also entering the postpartum care services market – a rapidly growing sector requiring standardized medical knowledge and professional practical skills.
According to the current training program, midwifery students focus on foundational knowledge in their first year. From the second year onwards, students specialize in obstetrics, gynecology, and neonatology; they are also equipped with skills in reproductive health counseling, premarital screening, family planning, and postpartum care for mothers and babies according to professional procedures.
From a student's perspective, Hoang Thi Y Nhi (a first-year midwifery student) said: She chose midwifery after being guided by her older sister, a former student of Dong Nai Medical College. “After hearing my sister's recommendation, I researched the field thoroughly and found that the teachers are very caring, friendly, and provide dedicated guidance. I myself love children, so I decided to pursue this field,” Y Nhi shared.
Meanwhile, student Nguyen Thi Minh Thu, from the Midwifery College Class 13, said that the clinical internship process has helped her become more attached to her field of study. “During my internship, I witnessed many pregnant women who didn't know how to properly care for their pregnancy according to medical standards. This made me even more determined to pursue this field because I can directly guide and help them protect their child's health from the moment they are in the womb,” Minh Thu expressed.
Improve the quality of training and increase job placement opportunities.
Alongside its thriving enrollment, Dong Nai Medical College places special emphasis on improving the quality of training and providing comprehensive support to students right from their first year of study.
According to Ms. Tran Thi My Le, lecturer in the Midwifery Department, the 14th cohort of the College of Midwifery (enrollment in 2025) has 46 students – the highest number in the last 8 years, a significant increase compared to previous cohorts. Notably, this is the first academic year that Dong Nai College of Health Sciences has implemented a dual-advisor model, consisting of a professional advisor and an administrative advisor. The professional advisor supports students with study methods and specialization orientation; the administrative advisor guides students in following the school's procedures, regulations, and rules. As students enter their second and third years (the specialized study phase), the lecturers continue to closely monitor and provide timely support during their studies and clinical practice.
To date, the Midwifery Department of Dong Nai Medical College has been established and developed for over 40 years. 100% of the department's full-time lecturers hold master's degrees, while visiting lecturers are doctors and midwives with high professional qualifications and extensive clinical experience. Throughout the training process, the department emphasizes the integration of theory with practice, upholding medical ethics and a spirit of community service.
To ensure the quality of training, the midwifery training program is developed according to the regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training, while also closely adhering to the professional guidelines of the Ministry of Health . In addition, the school regularly consults with obstetrics experts from Dong Nai General Hospital and Thong Nhat General Hospital, and pediatrics experts from Dong Nai Children's Hospital, thereby updating the teaching content to suit the practical treatment at the hospitals. This is considered a significant advantage, helping students feel confident during internships and entering the labor market after graduation.
In addition to regular classes, students are encouraged to participate in extracurricular activities, student union activities, and job fairs organized by the university. Notably, from their second year onwards, students are introduced to part-time work at private clinics outside of regular working hours, thereby honing their communication and interpersonal skills with patients and their families – crucial skills for healthcare professionals in their field.
